Key facts
March 22, 2022Launch with $1.5 Billion
Katie Haun announced the launch of Haun Ventures, saying it had raised $1.5 billion to support the growth of web3 and would invest through two platforms: a $500 million early-stage fund and a $1 billion acceleration fund.[1][1]
In the launch post she recounted that she had spent more than a decade at the U.S. Department of Justice prosecuting organized crime, murders, public corruption, prison gangs, white-collar crime, and money laundering, and in 2014 created one of the government’s first cryptocurrency task forces; after leaving government, Brian ArmstrongBrian ArmstrongBrian Armstrong is an American entrepreneur and the co-founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of the crypto asset trading platform Coinbase. September–November 2022: Policy Writing on Crypto Regulation
After the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned the mixing application Tornado Cash, Katie Haun wrote about its implications in September 2022; in October, she and James Rathmell argued that the government cannot shut down open-source software through sanctions that are not narrowly tailored, with Haun citing her decade prosecuting money launderers to stress that the fight against illicit finance must be legally sound.[5][6][6]
At the end of October, James Rathmell wrote in response to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) enforcement action against Ooki DAO, criticizing “regulation by enforcement” and petitioning the commission to make rules on the liability of DAO participants; in November, Tomicah Tilleman, Chris Lehane, and James Rathmell responded on the firm’s behalf to the U.S. Treasury’s request for input on digital assets.[7][7][8]
August 2023Questions About the Pace of Deployment
Soon after Haun Ventures launched, projects including Terra and FTX collapsed and crypto venture funding shrank sharply. In August 2023, Fortune reporters Leo Schwartz and Anne Sraders wrote in a feature that Haun had shown investors a deployment schedule of about two years while raising money, which had since been extended to about three years; as of mid-June 2023 the firm had deployed about 30% of its capital across about two dozen positions, roughly half of them in tokens. They argued that, because the firm charges management fees like other venture funds, it still faced pressure to put its capital to work; one limited partner said the firm was “not off to the races.” Haun Ventures declined to comment on its fees, and Haun herself turned down the reporters’ repeated interview requests.[9][9][9][9][9][9][9]
The firm’s team of 11 hosted about 70 limited partners and portfolio founders at its Menlo Park office in April 2023 to present its progress; its backers included Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, and the firm had not invested in FTX, which later went bankrupt. Fortune editor Jeff John Roberts commented that Haun’s cautious investing made sense, but that her disappearance from the media after FTX’s collapse would be harder for some to accept. He has written the blog AVC since 2003, chaired Etsy’s board for many years, and is a director of Coinbase.Open the full entry said that when Haun Ventures raised a second fund, it would need a tight story about how it had responded to the changing market.[9][9][9][9][10][10][9]
In response, partner Sam Rosenblum said there were two ways to get pacing wrong in a changing market: going too fast or going too slow; spokesperson Rachael Horwitz said the firm’s time was best spent on investing. Haun’s team also said she had been working behind the scenes for a functioning regulatory framework. In September 2023, Katie Haun said at TechCrunch Disrupt that the firm had deliberately delayed some deployments after the market correction and considered it a good time to invest in the space; she clarified that the firm was not one $1.5 billion fund but two, a $500 million early-stage fund and an acceleration fund for later-stage projects, and said it did not intend to increase its size even in a bull market.[9][9][10][11][11][11][11]
