1998Founding
In 1998, Ian Bremmer founded Eurasia Group with $25,000 as a firm devoted to helping investors and business decision-makers understand how politics affects the risks and opportunities in foreign markets, bringing political science to the investment community and to corporate decision-making. The firm started with him as its only staff member, working out of a cubicle at the World Policy Institute in New York.[1][2][2][2]
2004Moving to 475 Fifth Avenue
In 2004, the firm moved into headquarters offices at 475 Fifth Avenue in New York.[3]
January 2, 2007Top Political Risks for 2007
On January 2, 2007, in a note to clients, Bremmer listed the year’s top political risks, in order: Iran, Nigeria, Iraq, Turkey, Russia, China, and Pakistan/Afghanistan. He also highlighted four major trends: avian influenza, terrorism, resource nationalism, and protectionism. The firm also provided the note to the media.[4][4][4][4]

On October 7, 2014, the firm announced that Cliff Kupchan, practice head for Eurasia and Iran director, had been promoted to chairman, responsible for top-level analysis of global macro issues; the chief executive officer at the time was Robert Johnston. Kupchan joined the firm in 2005 and had previously worked at the State Department.[7][7][7][7][7]
2017Establishing GZERO Media
April 5, 2018Launching egX
On April 5, 2018, the firm launched egX, a platform business that works with outside specialist firms to develop geopolitics-related tools, such as partnering with Good Judgment Inc. to improve forecasting and working with technology firms to develop algorithmically driven forecasting tools and investment signals, and that deploys executive education programs through university and digital partnerships.[9][9][9][9]
July 14, 2018GZERO World Premieres
On July 14, 2018, GZERO Media’s weekly show GZERO WORLD with Ian Bremmer premiered on WNET, New York and New Jersey public television.[10]
June 10, 2019Maziar Minovi Becomes Chief Executive Officer
On June 10, 2019, the firm named Maziar Minovi, who had joined as managing director in March of that year, chief executive officer, responsible for firm strategy and for research, sales, and operations. He was the firm’s second CEO, succeeding Robert Johnston, who stepped down in 2018 to focus on the firm’s Global Energy and Natural Resources practice. Minovi previously worked in the Investment Strategy Group at Goldman Sachs.[11][11][11][11]
July 1, 2020Gerald Butts Becomes Vice Chairman
From July 1, 2020, Gerald Butts, formerly principal secretary to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, became vice chairman, working with CEO Minovi on strategic initiatives across the firm; he had joined in March of that year as a senior advisor and helped expand the firm’s coverage of global climate policy and sustainable finance.[12][12][12]

January 5, 2026Top Risks 2026
On January 5, 2026, the firm released Top Risks 2026, with the “US political revolution” as the top risk, arguing that President Trump’s attempt to systematically dismantle the checks on his power, capture the machinery of government, and turn it against his opponents would make the United States the principal source of global risk in 2026. The other nine risks, in order, were Overpowered, The Donroe Doctrine, Europe under siege, Russia’s second front, State capitalism with American characteristics, China’s deflation trap, AI eats its users, Zombie USMCA, and The water weapon; the report also listed several “red herrings” considered unlikely to pose significant threats. The report was co-written by Bremmer and then chairman Cliff Kupchan.[14][15][14][14][14]
