Key facts

Early Life in New England

Chris Meroff has written that he grew up in New England. In his later leadership writing, he revisited early ideas about strength, emotion and responsibility as part of examining his own management approach.[1]

Building a Family Business

In a Seek Go Create interview, he recalled starting a business with his parents in 1996 at age 22. His mother had been a school principal and his father worked in technology at Digital Equipment Corporation. The business later expanded education-related services across several states.[2]

Changes Affecting the Family Business

According to his interview account, a 2009 regulatory change in Maine affected the family business. His parents returned to active involvement, and disagreements over management became more pronounced.[2]

Moving to Austin and Building His Own Business

He left the family business and moved to Austin, Texas. His subsequent business, MSB Consulting, provided Medicaid consulting services to school districts, supporting reimbursement and related administrative processes.[3][4]

A Change in Management Approach

In later interviews, he described shifting from a client-centered to an employee-centered approach, arguing that supported employees could better serve clients. He also acknowledged that business growth had not automatically produced personal fulfillment.[5]

Expanding into Investment

He stated that he began private investment activities in 2019 using capital generated by his consulting business. Later public interviews identify the investment platform as Dirigo Capital Partners, with ventures in Austin and Maine.[6][7]

Publishing Align

His book Align presents an approach to leadership centered on employee fulfillment. An Author Hour interview on June 27, 2019 discussed the book and confirmed that it was already available.[8][9]

Investing in West Branch Farms

A public podcast biography dates his purchase of West Branch Farms to 2020 and describes an aim to support the local economy through employment and community services. The farm also became a setting for leadership retreats.[7]

Repurposing Office Space During the Pandemic

He recounted leasing roughly 30,000 square feet for ten years shortly before the pandemic as headquarters for several businesses. After some ventures closed, the team repurposed the space for community coworking, meetings and events.[6]

A Later Edition of Align

The Morgan James Publishing paperback edition of Align is dated November 3, 2020, with 186 pages and ISBN 9781642799941. This edition followed the version already available in 2019.[10][9]

MSB Acquisition Takes Effect

MSB’s client newsletter announced its acquisition by Craftsman Capital, effective January 31, 2023, with the existing team continuing to serve school districts. Meroff later described the sale as a $70 million transaction on his own website; that amount is his reported figure.[4][11]

School of Hard Knocks Interview

School of Hard Knocks published Entrepreneurs Guide To Start and Scale ANY Business, featuring Meroff on entrepreneurship, marketing, sales and team building. Its chapter list also includes Coffee Crisp and mentorship.[12]

Opening a Livestock Farm to Visitors

WABI reported that Chris and Sue Meroff opened a 45-acre livestock farm to visitors, with more than 200 animals. Their retail and livestock operations employed about 50 people at the time; further job growth was an aspiration.[14]

Reporting on a Local School Budget Debate

The Maine Monitor reported on July 2 that Meroff questioned special education costs, student numbers and the scale of school spending at a Machiasport town meeting.
