Key facts

Early Life and Schooling

Bloys grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, graduating from Freedom High School in 1989. A 2018 hometown profile described his childhood enthusiasm for television and initial uncertainty about entering the industry.[3]

Northwestern Graduation

He attended American University before transferring to Northwestern as a sophomore, studying economics and graduating in 1993. At a 2023 university event, he recalled choosing economics partly for practical reasons and initially knowing nobody in entertainment.[4]

Moving to Los Angeles

After college, he worked in advertising in New York. Client Paramount Pictures offered him a Los Angeles job in 1996. He subsequently became an assistant at CBS, learning television through everyday work.[3]

Wass-Stein

Before HBO, Bloys was director of development at Wass-Stein Productions from 2000 to 2004, following assistant work in CBS’s current-programming and development departments.[5]

Entering HBO Comedy

He joined HBO Independent Productions as director of development in 2004 and became vice president in 2005. He moved to HBO Entertainment as vice president of comedy in 2006, becoming senior vice president in 2009.[5]

Executive Vice President of Programming

On October 22, 2013, HBO elevated Bloys to executive vice president of programming, responsible for comedy, specials and talk shows and reporting to Michael Lombardo. Contemporary reporting identified Veep, Girls and Entourage among programs he had helped develop or oversee.[6]

Leading HBO Programming

He became president of series, late-night programming and specials in February 2016, then took charge of all HBO programming in May, encompassing series, documentaries, films and specials.[5]

Industry Conversation with Issa Rae

On April 25, 2017, the Paley Center hosted a Los Angeles conversation between Bloys and Insecure creator and star Issa Rae. Its official introduction listed Silicon Valley, Veep and Girls among programs associated with his earlier HBO comedy leadership.[7]

Television Academy Executive Committee

In February 2019, Television Academy chairman and CEO Frank Scherma appointed Bloys to that year’s executive committee, which advised on Academy activities and initiatives.[8]

Expanded Streaming and Network Responsibilities

WarnerMedia’s August 7, 2020 reorganization retained Bloys’s HBO remit and added originals for HBO Max, TNT, TBS and truTV, reporting to Ann Sarnoff. A separate team handled HBO Max’s product, marketing and global rollout; content leadership did not encompass the entire streaming operation.[9]

Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content

In October 2022, Bloys received the title of chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, reporting to David Zaslav. HBO programs earned 140 Emmy nominations and 38 awards that year, achievements of the programs and their teams rather than personal awards to Bloys.[1]

Another Academy Committee Appointment

On January 18, 2023, the Television Academy again named Bloys to its executive committee for that year. This verifies another annual appointment, not uninterrupted service since 2019.[10]

The Academy listed House of the Dragon, Peacemaker, Succession and The White Lotus within his programming remit. His role concerned content development and management, distinct from writing or directing those shows.[10]

Programming Judgment and AI

At Northwestern on October 5, 2023, Bloys emphasized entertainment that also says something about contemporary life and the value of varied creative backgrounds. Discussing AI, he argued that television depends on human experience and emotion, questioning whether technology could replace that depth.[4]

Fake-Account Reporting and HBO’s Response

On November 1, 2023, TheWrap reported allegations involving Bloys and colleagues using false social accounts to answer negative reviews, citing material connected to former employee Sully Temori’s dispute. HBO said it would defend against the lawsuit’s allegations and declined to discuss selected exchanges. Reporting and party statements are not judicial findings.[11]

Public Apology

At a subsequent New York programming presentation, Bloys acknowledged that using fake accounts to answer reviews was a mistake and apologized to the critics involved. He described six posts over roughly eighteen months during the pandemic and said he now communicated with critics directly. These details reflect his admission and explanation.[12]

The HBO Max Branding Strategy

On May 14, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced plans to rename Max as HBO Max that summer. Bloys connected the HBO brand with quality and distinctive programming audiences would pay for, articulating the company’s content positioning.[13]

Adaptation, Development and Cast Safety

In Variety’s March 2026 written Q&A, Bloys said a Harry Potter series allowed more time for the books. He described DC production decisions as script-led, without a fixed annual quota; development did not itself mean a production green light.[14]

Addressing racist abuse and death threats against actor Paapa Essiedu, he said the team had discussed social-media and safety issues with cast members and arranged security support.[14]

Emmy Nominations and Creative Teams

In TheWrap’s July 8, 2026 interview, HBO had received 122 Emmy nominations. Bloys credited creators alongside production, business and marketing teams, emphasizing room for creative visions. Nomination totals were neither award totals nor personal honors.[15]

Asked about new ownership and the programs of John Oliver and Bill Maher, he said he did not anticipate problems. That was his expectation at the interview, not a guarantee of future editorial policy.[15]

Content Responsibilities After the Merger

The October 2026 leadership announcement named Bloys co-chairman and chief content officer of Skydance’s direct-to-consumer business, overseeing HBO Max and Paramount+ content. Fellow co-chairman JB Perrette held distinct business responsibilities.[16]

Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery closed on October 6, 2026.[17]

A Multiyear Contract Extension

Variety’s October report, citing people familiar with the agreement, said Bloys had signed a multiyear extension whose terms were undisclosed. The 2027 date mentioned in reporting referred to the previous contract’s expiration, not the new agreement’s end date.[18]

Industry Organizations

The Paley Center for Media’s board list, marked current as of July 2026, included Bloys. It establishes membership at that time without specifying when he first joined.[19]
