Butch Hartman

Butch Hartman is an American animator, writer, director and producer whose creations include The Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, T.U.F.F. Puppy and Bunsen Is a Beast. His later work includes an independent studio, animation education and The Garden Cartoon.

Birth in Michigan

Butch Hartman was born in Highland Park, Michigan, and later became known for animation, writing, directing and producing.⁠[1]

California Institute of the Arts Education

CalArts identifies him as a Film/Video CERT 86 alumnus, indicating a 1986 certificate in Film/Video. While studying there, he worked on Don Bluth’s An American Tail.⁠[2][1]

Early Animation Work

His early work included My Little Pony and employment at Hanna-Barbera. His later credits included creative work on Dexter’s Laboratory, Cow and Chicken and Johnny Bravo.⁠[1][3]

Joining Nickelodeon

He joined Nickelodeon and created shorts for Oh Yeah! Cartoons, including The Fairly OddParents, which subsequently became a standalone series.⁠[3]

The Fairly OddParents Becomes a Series

The Fairly OddParents expanded from shorts into a half-hour series about Timmy Turner and his wish-granting fairy godparents, Cosmo and Wanda. Paramount’s later account records the original series as running through 2017 with 172 episodes.⁠[3][4]

The Television Academy’s prime-time Emmy database lists four nominations for his music and lyrics work on The Fairly OddParents: one in 2002, two in 2003 and one in 2004.⁠[5]

Danny Phantom Premieres

Bunsen Is a Beast, created and executive produced by Hartman, premiered on Nickelodeon. His fourth animated series for the network follows the young beast Bunsen as he attends a human school and befriends Mikey.⁠[3]

His Kickstarter campaign for OAXIS, a family subscription entertainment service, attracted $268,134 in pledges from 1,290 backers over 30 days, exceeding its $250,000 goal. The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder

The live-action and animated series The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder launched on Paramount+ with a 13-episode first season. Hartman and Fred Seibert were among its executive producers, with Christopher J. Nowak as showrunner.⁠[4]
