BNP Paribas

BNP Paribas is a banking and financial services group headquartered in Paris, France. It was formed by the 2000 merger of BNP and Paribas, with predecessor institutions dating to the nineteenth century. The group provides corporate and institutional banking, commercial and personal banking, investment management and insurance, with major commercial banking networks in France, Belgium, Italy and Luxembourg.

Origins in Predecessor Banks

BNP Paribas traces its lineage to an institution founded in Brussels in 1822 that became Société Générale de Belgique, and to the Paris discount bank CNEP, established in 1848. Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas, founded in 1872, was the predecessor of Paribas. These are predecessor dates; the BNP Paribas group was formed in 2000.⁠[1]

Creation of BNP Announced

France’s finance ministry announced the merger of CNEP and Banque Nationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie to create Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP). The combination established the commercial banking base later brought into BNP Paribas.⁠[1]

BNP and Paribas Merge

Following the 1999 takeover contest, BNP integrated Paribas. BNP’s general meeting approved the merger on May 23, 2000. The new group combined retail, corporate and investment banking with asset management, insurance and consumer finance, and introduced a common visual identity.⁠[2]

Integrating Italy’s BNL

BNP Paribas integrated BNL in 2006, extending its European commercial banking network. BNL subsequently became the group’s Italian retail banking brand.⁠[2][3]

Integrating Fortis Banking Operations

BNP Paribas integrated Belgium’s Fortis bank in 2009 following the financial crisis. Its commercial banking network now includes BNP Paribas Fortis in Belgium and BGL BNP Paribas in Luxembourg.⁠[2][3]

Launching Hello bank! in France

The group launched Hello bank! in France, offering banking through digital channels for customers seeking to handle everyday transactions on mobile devices.⁠[4]

Guilty Plea and Sentence in US Sanctions Case

BNP Paribas pleaded guilty on July 9, 2014 to conspiring to violate US sanctions laws, admitting that it processed dollar transactions for sanctioned Sudanese, Iranian and Cuban entities during 2004–2012. On May 1, 2015, a US court imposed five years’ probation, $8.8336 billion in forfeiture and a $140 million fine. Related regulatory settlements were credited toward the forfeiture rather than simply added to it.⁠[5]

Nickel Joins the Group

Payment account provider Nickel joined BNP Paribas. Its distribution model uses outlets such as tobacconists, with no minimum income requirement and no overdraft or credit facilities.⁠[4]

Completing the Floa Acquisition

The group completed its acquisition of payments company Floa, broadening its range of payment solutions for European customers.⁠[4]

Completing the Bank of the West Sale

BMO completed its purchase of Bank of the West from BNP Paribas. The transaction transferred nearly 1.8 million customers and more than 500 branches, commercial banking and wealth offices to the buyer, reshaping BNP Paribas’ US retail and commercial banking footprint.⁠[6]

Acquiring AXA Investment Managers

BNP Paribas Cardif completed its acquisition of AXA Investment Managers and established a long-term asset management partnership with AXA. The group combined these capabilities with its existing asset management and real estate investment businesses to expand services for insurers, pension funds and other clients.⁠[7][8]

Unifying the Asset Management Structure

In a January 5, 2026 announcement, the group said the main legal entities of AXA IM, BNP Paribas Asset Management and BNP Paribas Real Estate Investment Management had merged on December 31, 2025 under a unified structure owned by Cardif. They adopted the BNP Paribas Asset Management brand. Combined assets under management exceeded €1.6 trillion at September 30, 2025, the announcement’s reference date.⁠[8]

Reporting Second-Quarter Results

BNP Paribas reported second-quarter 2026 net banking income of €14.091 billion and net income attributable to the group of €4.345 billion, up 12.0% and 33.4% respectively. Exceptional items contributed a net positive €761 million. Its June 30 CET1 ratio was 13.0%. The release named Jean Lemierre as chairman and Jean-Laurent Bonnafé as CEO.⁠[9]

Five-Year Google Cloud Partnership

BNP Paribas and Google Cloud announced a five-year partnership, including planned integration of Gemini models into LLM@CIB, available to over 65,000 employees, and agent workflows such as corporate credit memo preparation. The announcement separately described an existing deployment: Nickel Assist used Gemini to help 200 customer advisers retrieve procedural guidance.⁠[10]

Further Investment in Capitolis

BNP Paribas participated in Capitolis’ Series E as an existing equity investor.⁠[11]

Business: Three Operating Divisions

BNP Paribas has three operating divisions: Corporate & Institutional Banking; Commercial, Personal Banking & Services; and Investment & Protection Services. They cover financing, capital markets, securities services, payments, banking, insurance and asset management. Its principal eurozone commercial banking markets are France, Belgium, Italy and Luxembourg.⁠[3]
