Key facts

Foundation

Gallerists Trudl Bruckner, Balz Hilt and Ernst Beyeler founded Art Basel in Switzerland. Its first edition brought together 90 galleries and 30 publishers from ten countries and drew over 16,000 visitors.[3]

Gallery selection

In 1974, a committee of gallerists and experts began selecting applicants, alongside the New Trends sector for younger artists.[4]

Photography

For photography’s 150th anniversary in 1989, sixteen association-member galleries presented historical photography, followed by five thematic photography exhibitions.[4]

Banking partnership

Emerging artists and prizes

Statements began in 1996 to showcase emerging artists. The Baloise Art Prize followed in 1999 to support artists presented there.[3]

Film and large-scale work

Art Film began in 1999. Unlimited followed in 2000, accommodating installations, monumental sculpture, video and performance beyond conventional booth dimensions.[4]

Miami Beach

The 2002 Miami Beach debut was Art Basel’s first fair outside Switzerland, extending its network between the Americas and Europe.[5]

Talks and public projects

Conversations launched in 2004 for discussions of collecting and exhibiting. Parcours extended artworks and performances into Basel’s historic neighborhoods in 2010.[4]

Hong Kong

Art Basel’s inaugural Hong Kong fair in 2013 extended its network into Asia.[3]

Art-market research

In 2017, Art Basel and UBS commissioned their first joint global art-market report, written by cultural economist Clare McAndrew, beginning an annual research program.[5][6]

Online Viewing Rooms

After the Hong Kong fair was canceled, Art Basel announced Online Viewing Rooms for March 20–25, with two preceding VIP days. Accepted Hong Kong exhibitors could participate free of charge, show prices or price ranges and receive inquiries directly from buyers.[7]

Paris expansion

The Paris fair began in 2022 as Paris+ par Art Basel at the Grand Palais Éphémère, adding another European location.[8]

Noah Horowitz becomes CEO

MCH Group announced on October 28, 2022 that Noah Horowitz would become Art Basel CEO on November 7, succeeding Marc Spiegler. The October 2026 collecting-survey announcement still identifies Horowitz as CEO.[9][6]

Art Basel Paris and the Grand Palais

In 2024, organizers renamed the fair Art Basel Paris and announced its October move to the restored Grand Palais. The program comprised Galeries, Emergence and the new Premise sector, alongside public projects across the city.[8]

Art Basel Awards

The first Art Basel Awards, presented with BOSS, honored 36 medalists in Basel on June 19, spanning artists, curators, institutions, patrons and supporting professions. The announced Koyo Kouoh Fellowship would support one African arts professional annually for three years.[10]

First Gold Awardees

On December 4, eleven inaugural Gold Awardees were recognized in Miami Beach through peer voting by medalists. Meriem Bennani received the separate BOSS Award for Outstanding Achievement.[11]

Zero 10

Zero 10 debuted at Miami Beach in 2025 and expanded to Hong Kong and Basel in 2026. It covers code, algorithms, robotics, immersive installations, light and sound. Eli Scheinman and Trevor Paglen co-curated its Basel edition.[12]

First Qatar edition

The first Art Basel Qatar ran February 5–7 at M7 and Doha Design District, following VIP days on February 3–4. Partners included QSI and QC+, with Wael Shawky as artistic director. Organizers reported 87 galleries from 31 countries and territories and over 17,000 visitors across VIP and public days.[2]

Debate over Qatar expansion

SRF reported an ethical debate over Qatar. MCH’s Andrea Zappia argued that expansion brings collectors and supports young galleries. Basel politician Michela Seggiani criticized commercial priorities and feared self-censorship. Christie’s executive Dirk Boll said galleries had not reported Art Basel restrictions on exhibits to him. The concerns were not proof of an established censorship incident.[13]

Survey of Global Collecting

On October 8, Art Basel and UBS released Arts Economics’ Survey of Global Collecting 2026, written by Clare McAndrew. Among surveyed wealthy collectors, Gen Z’s average fine-art spending in both 2025 and the first half of 2026 exceeded twice that of every older generation. This describes respondents, not all young people.[6]

Sample and high-price purchases

The sample comprised 3,100 active wealthy collectors in ten markets; its Gen Z group was aged 20–29. Only about 1% reported a single work costing over USD 1 million in 2025 and H1 2026; Gen Z accounted for nearly half of that small group. The survey is not population-representative, and outliers affect averages.[14]

Fair and curatorial model

Unlimited illustrates the combination of commerce and curation: a selection committee chooses works, a curator organizes their presentation and infrastructure adapts to each project. Large-scale works are both exhibited and offered for sale.[15]

Sustainability measures

Art Basel describes measuring fair emissions, improving energy and waste management, reusing materials and pursuing lower-carbon freight and staff travel. It participates in the Gallery Climate Coalition. These stated measures do not establish that carbon neutrality has been achieved.[16]
