June 1, 2023Adding AI-Powered Search and E-Commerce Features
On June 1, 2023, the AP announced the launch of AI-powered search on AP Newsroom: rather than relying on traditional metadata, the system understands a user’s descriptive language to find photos and video, and can locate specific moments within an entire video clip, using the NOMAD engine from the software company MerlinOne. The platform also added e-commerce features allowing non-subscription customers to license photos and video on a self-serve, per-use basis; AI-powered search was first made available to non-subscription customers, with traditional customers gaining access later that month. Paul Caluori, AP vice president of global products, said the feature makes footage searchable even if it has never been tagged or captioned, unlocking AP’s visual archive. By then, AP Newsroom had replaced the AP Images and AP Archive platforms, and the AP had more than 60 million photos available for licensing.[2][2][2][2][2][2][2][2][2][2][2][2]
April 2025Launching the New AP Newsroom
In April 2025, the AP launched a redesigned AP Newsroom, positioned as an AI-powered content delivery platform that makes it easy for users to navigate its visual, audio, and text content. New features included “Storylines,” powered by Storytelling AI from ShortTok, which organizes video and photo content around themes and stories; “More Like This,” also from ShortTok, which recommends visually similar or contextually related content; customizable homepages by topic, region, and format; access to AP’s exclusive historical archives; and breaking news alerts with audio alerting. Kristin Heitmann, AP senior vice president and chief revenue officer, said the new platform is user-centric and helps customers get the content they need more quickly and jump on breaking news.[3][3][3][3][3][3][3][3][4][4]
Features
As of October 2026, AP Newsroom’s main features include AI-powered photo and video search that matches visuals to search queries, AI-driven related content suggestions, customizable homepages, real-time breaking news alerts with audio alerting, and browsing and downloading text, video, photos, and audio in one place; the AP news material on the platform spans from 1895 to today, including the historical archive.[5][5][5][5][5][5][5]
