Key facts
Early Life: Growing Up in the Bay Area and Education
Fang grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and graduated in 2010 from The Harker School in San Jose, California. There he excelled academically, served as student body president, performed in school musicals including “Music Man” and “Les Misérables,” and took an advanced computer science course in neural networks; he recalled that being part of the school musical was one of his most cherished times in high school because it was totally outside his comfort zone.[1][2][2][2][2][2]
Fang at first did not want to attend Stanford University because it was so close to home, but his passion for computer science and his understanding that Silicon Valley was the hub of innovation and entrepreneurship led him to enroll there, where he met his future co-founders Stanley Tang and Tony Xu. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Stanford in 2014.[2][1][2]
February 2013Founding Palo Alto Delivery
In early 2013, Fang, then still a Stanford computer science undergraduate, was deciding with Stanley Tang, Tony Xu, and Evan Moore what kind of company to start. While interviewing local merchants, they noticed that many shops had backlogs of orders they could not deliver, and decided to test whether a third party could make deliveries for merchants. One Saturday that February, the four built a prototype website called Palo Alto Delivery in an hour, uploading PDF menus from eight local restaurants and taking orders through a shared Google Voice phone number; 45 minutes after going live, they received their first order from a stranger, and they promptly drove to pick up the food and deliver it.[3][3][3][3][3][3][3][3][3]
In the early days the service operated only on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Fang personally delivered the first couple of hundred orders on the platform.[2]

2015Developing the Deep Red Dispatch System
By 2015, DoorDash had begun building a delivery dispatch system called Deep Red, named as an homage to the IBM chess computer that beat Garry Kasparov. Fang, then 23, said the team wanted it to do for local logistics what Deep Blue did in chess. The system collects data on a large number of predictors to estimate delivery times, works with partner apps to take into account conditions such as traffic and weather, and analyzes menus and ready times to determine which dishes take longer to prepare.[3][3][3][3]

December 2020DoorDash Goes Public
On December 9, 2020, DoorDash went public on the New York Stock Exchange at an initial public offering price of $102 per share, opened at $182 on its first day, and raised $3.37 billion in the IPO. Fang, then 28, was listed in the prospectus as Head of Consumer Engineering and Director. After the offering, the three co-founders, Fang, Tony Xu, and Stanley Tang, held all shares of Class B common stock, together accounting for about 69% of the company’s voting power; the three also entered into a voting agreement giving Xu the authority to vote the Class B shares held by Fang and Tang.[4][4][6][6][4][4][4][4]

2026Board Term and Shareholding
As of April 2026, Fang remained a Class II director of DoorDash, with a term running until 2028. The board selected him because of the perspective and experience he brings as a co-founder. He is compensated as an employee and receives no additional compensation as a director.[7][7][7][7][7][7]
