Early Life: International Education and Venture Capital Background

Fiskum has said he lived in Sweden, Switzerland, and Norway, studied in Norway, Singapore, and China, and worked as a data scientist in the Philippines before moving to Hong Kong; he describes himself as Norwegian and by 2023 had lived in Hong Kong for eight years. He worked in venture capital in Hong Kong with a focus on fintech, and around late 2016 began engaging with cryptocurrency, initially from a research perspective and through personal investments.[1][1][1][1][1]

Co-Founding TOKEN2049

Fiskum recalled that the team had few connections in the crypto industry at the time, so they decided to host a conference, inviting people from the industry who would then recommend more speakers and projects, as a way to rapidly expand their network. The first TOKEN2049 was held in Hong Kong on March 20–21, 2018; he recalled that it drew about 1,500 attendees.[1][1][2][1]

On Running TOKEN2049 and Its Name

In an interview in September 2023, Fiskum responded to rumors among attendees about the organizers’ profits, saying that people often underestimate the material costs, time, and effort required to organize such events. He explained that the “2049” in the conference’s name was meant to sound mysterious and hint at the future, and that a number is easier for audiences in different places to remember than a name that is hard to pronounce; at the time the team had five core members in Hong Kong, with other members in the UK, Thailand, and the Philippines.[1][1][1][1][1][1]

First SuperAI Announced

On January 10, 2024, Fiskum announced that the artificial intelligence conference SuperAI would debut on June 5–6 at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, with 5,000 attendees expected; he said that more than 60% of registrants to date came from overseas. When it opened in June, SuperAI’s international attendance exceeded 70%.[3][3][3][3][4]

Reviewing the 20,000-Attendee Singapore Edition

After the Singapore edition ended in September 2024, Fiskum said it had brought together 20,000 attendees, more than 400 exhibitors, and more than 800 side events, setting a new benchmark for the world’s largest crypto gathering.[7]

Full Focus on the Singapore Edition

After TOKEN2049’s Dubai edition was postponed to 2027, Fiskum said on August 6, 2026, that the team was putting its full focus that year on the Singapore edition and that more than 70% of the exhibition floor had already been booked; on October 6, he announced that the Singapore edition had sold out ahead of the event and said major announcements would be made there.[8][8][9][9]

TOKEN2049 Expansion to New York Announced

On October 7, 2026, TOKEN2049 announced at its Singapore edition that it would hold its first New York edition on June 16–17, 2027. Fiskum said bringing the conference to the US had been “a long time coming,” that attendees and partners had been asking for it, and that the team had been waiting for the right moment and setting; New York would become a permanent annual fixture alongside Dubai and Singapore.[10][10][10][10]
