Dutton是美國圖書出版社，現為Penguin Random HousePenguin Random HousePenguin Random House是總部位於美國紐約的大眾圖書出版集團，由Bertelsmann旗下的Random House與Pearson旗下的Penguin合併，於2013年7月1日成立，2020年起由Bertelsmann全資擁有。其前身包括1925年由Bennett Cerf與Donald Klopfer收購The Modern Library起家、1927年擴展為綜合出版社的Random House，以及1935年由Allen Lane創辦的Penguin Books。集團在20多個國家開展業務，旗下有300多個出版品牌，包括Alfred A. 1852—1874年波士頓創立與轉向出版
1852年，Edward Payson Dutton在波士頓創辦一家書店。1864年，以他名字命名的E. P. Dutton & Co.開始正式出版圖書，早期以宗教類書籍為主；第一本暢銷書是Frederic W. Farrar的兩卷本《The Life of Christ》，於1874年出版。[1]
這家書店由Dutton與一名合夥人共同創辦。1864年開始出版業務，是因為公司買下了附帶小型出版部門的Ticknor & Fields書店。1869年，Dutton在紐約開設第一家書店，並把總部遷到紐約。[2]
1885—1944年John Macrae時期
1885年，John Macrae進入Dutton擔任勤雜員，此後在公司工作了59年並逐級升遷。他於1923年出任總裁，1928年買下出版社，與兩個兒子共同持有。[1]
Macrae入職時19歲，在紐約門店當店員；Macrae家族此後與公司關係延續近百年。1923年E. P. Dutton去世後，Macrae接任總裁。他擴大了童書出版，Dutton成為Winnie-the-Pooh系列的美國出版商；Macrae與1921年入職的兒子John Macrae Jr.曾在Macy’s百貨的櫥窗裡陳列這些書。1928年，零售與出版業務分拆，Macrae買下出版部門，並一直領導到1944年去世。[2]
1944—1976年Macrae家族第二、三代
1944年，John Macrae Jr.出任董事長。1947年，Dutton出版Mickey Spillane的《I, the Jury》和Gore Vidal的《The City and the Pillar》。1968年，曾在Harper & Brothers任編輯的John Macrae III回到Dutton主持社務。1976年，Dutton出版Gail Sheehy的《Passages》，該書成為大暢銷書。[2]
1976—1986年數度易主併入Penguin
1976年，Dutton被出售給Elsevier，這次合併維持了五年。1981年，原定出售給Volt的交易告吹後，Dyson-Kissner-Moran集團買下Dutton；John Macrae III隨後離開，轉往Holt, Rinehart and Winston主持John Macrae Books品牌。1985年，Dutton被出售給NAL；1986年，Penguin收購NAL。此後，Dutton的平裝再版書分別移交Plume（大開本平裝）和NAL（大眾平裝），成人圖書與童書部門也被分開。[2]
1998—2015年Brian Tart時期與出版150週年
Brian Tart於1998年加入Dutton，後任總裁兼出版人，主持Dutton九年。[3]
Tart把2014年定為Dutton作為出版社的150週年，公司在官網發佈歷史要點；自12月下旬出版的Jussi Adler-Olsen《The Purity of Vengeance》起，2014年出版的每本書都印上新標識和一段公司歷史介紹。當時Dutton每年出版約40種精裝書，虛構與非虛構各半，並同步發行電子書；2013年共有20種Dutton圖書登上《紐約時報》印刷版及擴展暢銷書榜。[2]
2015年1月Putnam與Dutton合併管理
2015年1月，Penguin Publishing Group重組：Brian Tart卸任Dutton、Gotham和Avery的總裁兼出版人，轉任Viking總裁兼出版人；原G.P. Putnam’s Sons總裁Ivan Held出任Putnam與Dutton總裁；自2007年起任Dutton總編輯的Ben Sevier升任出版人併兼任總編輯；Dutton副社長Christine Ball改為同時負責兩家出版社的營銷與宣傳。Putnam與Dutton保留各自的編輯部門、書目和品牌特色。同一重組中，Hudson Street Press與Gotham Books在2015年夏季書目後停辦。[4]
2017年Christine Ball任出版人，John Parsley任總編輯
Ben Sevier離開Dutton，接替Jamie Raab出任Grand Central Publishing出版人。原Putnam、Dutton與Berkley副社長Christine Ball隨即升任這三家出版社的高級副總裁兼出版人，向三家總裁Ivan Held彙報；各社編輯部門仍獨立選題和簽約。[5]
2017年3月，原Little, Brown副總裁兼執行編輯John Parsley出任Dutton副總裁兼總編輯，填補Sevier離任留下的空缺。[6]
Parsley負責Dutton編輯部。同時，Berkley專注軍事史的Caliber書系及其執行編輯Brent Howard轉入Dutton，與Dutton執行編輯Jill Schwartzman、Stephen Morrow和Maya Ziv一起向Parsley彙報。[7]
2024—2026年Annie Jacobsen的情景推演系列
2024年，Dutton在紐約出版Annie Jacobsen的《Nuclear War: A Scenario》精裝本，正文373頁，前置部分24頁，ISBN 9780593476093。[8]
2026年7月28日，Jacobsen的《Biological War: A Scenario》精裝本上市，全書432頁，定價33美元。[9]
該書的出版項為“New York, NY : Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Random House LLC, 2026”（紐約：Penguin Random House LLC旗下Dutton，2026年）。[10]
2024年5月John Parsley任出版人
2024年5月，John Parsley升任Dutton副總裁兼出版人，向總裁Ivan Held彙報，統管該社編輯、營銷與宣傳；Christine Ball升任執行副總裁併專任Berkley出版人，不再負責Dutton。[11]
此前Parsley已在Dutton及其旗下Plume和Tiny Reparations Books擔任總編輯七年，經手作者包括Scott Ellsworth、Annie Jacobsen、Jonathan Karl、Jason Mott和Joe Posnanski。Penguin Publishing Group總裁Allison Dobson在致員工信中宣佈了這一人事變動。[12]

Macrae時期，Dutton出版的書包括Cleveland Amory的《The Proper Bostonians》、Marchette Chute的《Shakespeare of London》、John Hunt的《The Conquest of Everest》和Françoise Sagan的《Bonjour Tristesse》，以及Lawrence Durrell、Milton Glaser和Luigi Pirandello的作品。此後出版過的作者有John Irving（《The World According to Garp》）、James Beard、Peter Matthiessen、Jorge Luis Borges、Gavin Maxwell、Joyce Carol Oates、Gore Vidal、Gail Sheehy（《Passages》）、Ayn Rand和Mickey Spillane。[1]

Dutton每年出版約70種圖書，虛構與非虛構各佔一半，旗下有Plume和Tiny Reparations Books兩個品牌。Ivan Held任Putnam、Dutton和Berkley總裁，負責三家的業務與出版戰略；John Parsley任Dutton及Plume、Tiny Reparations Books的副總裁兼出版人。2027年是Dutton創立175週年。[1][1]
