He won the Pentamind world games championship a record five times before retiring from competitive play in 2003.[4]

Elixir Studios Closes

In April 2005 Elixir Studios announced it was ceasing day-to-day operations and selling its remaining assets and IP. As founder and chairman, he said: “today’s games industry no longer has room for small independent developers.”[9]

PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL

He then returned to academia and completed a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at University College London (UCL) in 2009, supervised by Eleanor Maguire with Geraint Rees as secondary supervisor; he continued as a postdoctoral researcher at UCL’s Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit.[10]

Publishes Research on Memory and Imagination

In 2007 he published a paper in PNAS with Dharshan Kumaran, Seralynne Vann and Eleanor Maguire showing that amnesic patients with bilateral hippocampal damage were markedly impaired at imagining new experiences, with imagined scenes lacking spatial coherence.[11]

This research linking memory and imagination was named one of Science’s top ten breakthroughs of 2007.[12]

Co-Founds DeepMind

Google Acquires DeepMind

In January 2014 GoogleGoogleGoogle is an American technology company founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin and incorporated in 1998. It became an Alphabet subsidiary in 2015. Its businesses include internet search, advertising, software platforms, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.Open the full entry agreed to buy the British artificial intelligence company DeepMind for an undisclosed amount; a Google spokeswoman confirmed the acquisition had gone ahead but declined to comment further, and the price was estimated at between $400 million and $500 million.[14]

He said after the deal that he had no plans to leave London, where he lived with his wife, a molecular biologist, and two young sons.[4]

In 2014 he received the Royal Society’s Mullard Award.[12]

AlphaGo

In October 2015 DeepMind’s Go program AlphaGo played its first game against three-time European champion Fan Hui; in March 2016 it beat Lee Sedol 4–1 in Seoul, South Korea, in a match watched by more than 200 million people, earning a 9 dan professional ranking.[15]

DQN and Deep Reinforcement Learning

DeepMind’s DQN system learned to play games on the Atari 2600 console: the team trained separate agents for 50 different games, each receiving only raw screen pixels and the score, with no prior knowledge of the rules.[16]

Elected FREng and Appointed CBE

In 2017 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and he was named to the Time 100 list in 2017 and 2025; he is also a Fellow of the Royal Society.[17]

That year he was appointed CBE for services to science and technology.[13]

AlphaZero

AlphaFold Cracks Protein Structure Prediction

In the CASP14 assessment AlphaFold achieved a median score of 92.4 GDT across all targets and 87.0 on the hardest free-modelling targets, and the CASP organisers recognised it as a solution to the challenge; CASP co-founder John Moult said: “We have been stuck on this one problem – how do proteins fold up – for nearly 50 years.”[19]

Founds Isomorphic Labs

In November 2021 Alphabet launched Isomorphic Labs, an AI drug-discovery company spun out of DeepMind and headquartered in London, founded and led by him as acting CEO while he also served as CEO of DeepMind; in May 2022 the company announced its first management team.[20]
