2023Formation and Seed Funding
Founded in 2023 by Douwe Kiela and Amanpreet Singh, Contextual AI announced $20 million in seed funding on June 7, led by Bain Capital Ventures with Lightspeed, Greycroft and SV AngelSV AngelSV Angel is a San Francisco venture capital firm cofounded in 2009 by angel investor Ron Conway and former Google executive David Lee. It typically writes small follow-on checks in seed rounds and has invested in companies such as Airbnb, Pinterest, and Dropbox; in 2018 it said it would no longer raise new funds from outside investors, and from 2022 it set up growth funds.Open the full entry participating.[1]
2024Series A
On August 1, the company announced an $80 million Series A led by Greycroft. New investors included Bezos Expeditions, NVentures, HSBC Ventures and Snowflake Ventures. Greycroft partner Marcie Vu joined the board.[2]
2025General Availability
On January 15, Contextual AI Platform became generally available for building, evaluating and deploying retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) agents. Its RAG 2.0 approach jointly optimizes retrieval and generation.[3]
January 2026Agent Composer
Agent Composer, launched on January 26, offers prebuilt agents, natural-language generation and a visual builder. It coordinates tools and multi-step reasoning and combines dynamic agents with deterministic workflows.[4]
May 2026Licensing and Recruitment
