Charles Hoskinson
Charles Hoskinson is a co-founder of Ethereum, the founder of Cardano, and the founder and chief executive officer of Input Output Group. He took part in EthereumEthereumEthereum is an open, general-purpose smart contract blockchain that launched in 2015, and its native asset is ether (ETH). The project was proposed by Vitalik Buterin and advanced jointly by eight co-founders; the network now uses proof of stake and centers on the EVM, the account model, a rollup scaling roadmap, and the open EIP process.Open the full entry’s early operations, left in 2014, founded Input Output in 2015, and has driven the research and engineering roadmap of Cardano and of Midnight, a programmable privacy network; Midnight was publicly announced in 2022, and its mainnet created its genesis block in March 2026.

Education: What Public Records Can and Cannot Confirm
Ethereum’s official 2014 team biography said Hoskinson had studied at Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Colorado Boulder, with a focus on analytic number theory. Later minutes of an MSU Denver board of trustees meeting likewise say only that he “attended MSU Denver for a time.” These primary materials support “attended and studied mathematics,” but none of them confirms a degree title, a graduation year, or a doctoral program.[1]
He has long described formal methods, number theory, and computer science as professional interests; whether he completed a degree, and his claims about a doctoral program, are disputed.[1]
2013Bitcoin Education Project
In 2013 Hoskinson left consulting work and devoted most of his energy to BitcoinBitcoinBitcoin (common symbol BTC) is an open peer-to-peer electronic cash protocol, network, and native digital asset. Full nodes independently verify transactions and blocks according to the consensus rules; transactions are recorded as UTXOs, and blocks are organized into a public ledger through proof of work. Bitcoin is not issued or managed by any single institution, but using, holding in custody, and trading it still involve key, privacy, market, and legal risks.Open the full entry education. The Bitcoin Education Project explained Bitcoin, cryptography, and decentralized systems through public courses and community events; Ethereum’s official 2014 team biography explicitly listed him as the project’s founder.[1]
The project brought him into the early cryptocurrency startup network and connected him with developers and entrepreneurs who later worked on BitShares, Ethereum, and IOHK. Figures such as course reach were disclosed in different years by Hoskinson himself or by the project.[1]
2013Invictus Innovations and BitShares
Before joining Ethereum, Hoskinson founded and led Invictus Innovations, working with Dan Larimer to advance the BitShares concept. BitShares’ official history records that the two publicly presented the vision at the Atlanta Bitcoin conference in October 2013; Invictus tried to package decentralized exchange, programmable assets, and delegated governance into a commercial blockchain product.[2]
The partnership did not last long, and Hoskinson then moved to Ethereum. BitShares’ later code, consensus, and governance continued to evolve under Larimer, developers, and the community, so the project’s entire life cycle cannot be attributed to Hoskinson; his verifiable role centers mainly on Invictus’s early corporate organization and public promotion.[2]
2013–2014Ethereum Co-Founding Period
Ethereum’s official history lists Hoskinson among its eight co-founders. He worked on business and organizational matters in the project’s early stage and left in 2014 after disagreement deepened over whether the project should be structured as a for-profit company or a nonprofit foundation.[3]
Ethereum’s For-Profit Versus Nonprofit Split
Ethereum’s early team had to decide whether the project would be a venture-backed for-profit company or whether a nonprofit foundation would hold core development and the trademark. A Forbes interview with Hoskinson described him as being on the side favoring the for-profit company route; Vitalik ButerinVitalik ButerinVitalik Buterin is the originator of Ethereum, the author of its whitepaper, and one of its eight co-founders, as well as a co-founder of Bitcoin Magazine. The Ethereum Foundation calls him the inventor of Ethereum; he has long been involved in protocol research and public discussion, but does not control the network as a CEO.Open the full entry and other members ultimately chose a Swiss nonprofit foundation structure. After the team reorganization in June 2014, Hoskinson left day-to-day leadership.[4]
The split involved control, financing, founder roles, and legal risk all at once. Ethereum has since been advanced jointly by an open community, client teams, and the foundation, with no founder equity or CEO controlling the network. Hoskinson’s status as a co-founder is a historical contribution and does not mean he continued to manage Ethereum after 2014.[4]
2015Founding Input Output
Input Output’s official materials say Hoskinson founded Input Output Group in 2015 and serves as its chief executive officer. The company focuses on research and engineering and later became one of the main early builders of Cardano. The Cardano network is not IOG’s private corporate database; the evolution of its rules also involves the foundation, EMURGO, validators, and token-holder governance.[5]
2014–2015Co-Founding IOHK with Jeremy Wood
After leaving Ethereum, Hoskinson took about half a year off. Jeremy Wood, who had handled operations at Ethereum, then contacted him, and in 2015 the two co-founded Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK, later known as Input Output Global and Input Output). The company was positioned not as the issuer of a single token but as a firm taking on projects in cryptography, distributed systems, formal methods, and blockchain engineering.[4]
Input Output’s current leadership page lists Hoskinson as founder and CEO; earlier company materials also listed Wood as a co-founder. The company later grew into a multinational research and engineering organization, and the role of an individual founder should be attributed separately from the work of hundreds of researchers, engineers, and external academic collaborators.[4]
IOHK’s Early Contracts, Bitcoin Income, and Corporate Risk
A 2018 ForbesForbesForbes is an American business media brand that began with Forbes magazine, founded by B.C. Forbes in 1917. It is known for rankings such as the Forbes 400, the World’s Billionaires list and 30 Under 30, and operates Forbes.com, ForbesLive events and licensed editions in 81 countries. Since 2014 a majority stake has been held by the Hong Kong investment group Integrated Whale Media; a 2021 plan to list on the New York Stock Exchange through a special purpose acquisition company was terminated in 2022. It is headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey.Open the full entry report cited Hoskinson as saying that he and Wood started IOHK with their own funds on the order of several hundred thousand dollars, and that early on it signed research and development contracts with several crypto projects that paid in bitcoin. The subsequent rise in bitcoin’s value funded the company’s team expansion and long-term research, but this model also exposed the company’s balance sheet to crypto market volatility.[4]
The report estimated Hoskinson’s personal wealth at the time at about $500 million to $600 million; this figure is a historical media estimate made at a particular market peak and based on assumptions about publicly known holdings. It is not an audited net worth, and still less can it be taken as his current wealth in 2026.[4]
Founding Cardano and a Research-Driven Development Path
In written congressional testimony, Hoskinson described himself as one of the founders of Ethereum, the founder of Cardano, and the chief executive officer of IOG. Cardano uses the Ouroboros family of proof-of-stake protocols and emphasizes peer review, formal methods, and phased upgrades; these system achievements were produced jointly by multidisciplinary teams and cannot be equated with his personal inventions in their entirety.[6]
Role in Cardano: Architectural Advocate and Organizational Leader, Not a Sole Developer
Hoskinson pushed Cardano to adopt research papers, formal specifications, Haskell implementations, and phased mainnet upgrades, and, as IOG’s chief executive officer, took part in its roadmap, funding, and external communications. He is also one of the co-authors of CIP-1694 and took part in designing the system that moved governance from genesis keys to joint voting by DReps, SPOs, and a Constitutional Committee.[6]
Ouroboros, Plutus, the node, wallets, governance tools, and hard forks were built by many cryptographers, formal-methods researchers, engineering teams, and community maintainers. Being Cardano’s founder does not mean Hoskinson personally produced all of the papers, code, or governance decisions; after Plomin, he also cannot unilaterally change the protocol or withdraw treasury funds.[6]
ADA Compensation and Personal Holdings: The Limits of Company Disclosures
A historical statement from IOG says the company received a combination of bitcoin and ADA as compensation for Cardano research and development, with the ADA portion unlocking on a set schedule; the company also stated that Hoskinson personally did not receive the related compensation until the final stage of the arrangement. The disclosure explains that IOHK’s allocation in the genesis distribution and personal compensation are not the same thing.[7]
The source is IOG’s own statement, not an audit of personal wallets. The ADA allocated to IOHK in the genesis block, assets the company later sold or retained, Hoskinson’s compensation, and his personal on-chain addresses must be kept separate; without ongoing, verified disclosure of wallet ownership, his current personal holdings cannot be inferred from the company’s initial allocation.[7]
2017–2021IOHK’s Mantis Period with Ethereum Classic
In 2017 IOHK released Mantis, a client for Ethereum Classic written in Scala; the team’s work included the node, a wallet, a block explorer, and testnet tools. After the 51% attacks in 2020, the company reorganized the Mantis team to research security and sustainability measures such as checkpointing and a treasury mechanism.[8]
Hoskinson took part in this phase as IOHK’s CEO and a public advocate, but Mantis’s engineering was carried out by teams such as Grothendieck. IOG and the Ethereum Classic community later had public disagreements over issues such as a treasury proposal and social media accounts, and the partnership did not continue throughout.[8]
2020–2022Institutional Funding in University Research Partnerships
In 2020 the University of Wyoming announced that it had received a gift of ADA worth $500,000 from IOHK for an advanced blockchain research and development laboratory; state matching funds brought the project to $1 million. Research areas included cryptography, authentication, supply chains, smart contracts, and blockchain software and hardware applications, and the university planned to involve faculty, graduate students, and visiting researchers.[9]
Hoskinson attended the gift announcement and said Wyoming’s regulatory and entrepreneurial environment led IOHK to choose the state; the university also mentioned that his father practiced medicine in Gillette and cited his motivation to give back to the state. The legal and financial donor remained IOHK.[9]
2021$20 Million Gift to Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellon UniversityCarnegie Mellon UniversityCarnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a private research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It grew out of the Carnegie Technical Schools, founded with funding from Andrew Carnegie in 1900, which were renamed the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1912 and took the present name after merging with the Mellon Institute in 1967. The university is known for computer science, robotics, engineering, and the arts, and has campuses in Qatar, Silicon Valley, and Rwanda. As of September 2025, it enrolled 16,582 students. Its current president is Farnam Jahanian. On September 30, 2026, the university announced a $3 billion gift from Ken Griffin and plans to build a new campus in Miami.Open the full entry announced in September 2021 that Hoskinson had personally donated $20 million to establish the Charles C. Hoskinson Center for Formal Mathematics. The center is housed in the Department of Philosophy and focuses on using formal computational methods to advance mathematical research, knowledge bases, and education, as well as the application of automated reasoning and machine learning to mathematics.[10]
The center relies heavily on the Lean proof assistant and its Mathlib ecosystem, and the endowment created by the gift supports doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, undergraduate research, visiting scholars, conferences, and build servers. In public materials, this is a philanthropic project that can be clearly attributed to Hoskinson personally, and it should be kept separate from IOG’s corporate funding of other universities.[10]
2022Stanford IOG Research Hub
In 2022 IOG and Stanford UniversityStanford UniversityStanford University is a research university in California founded by Leland and Jane Stanford in 1885 and opened in 1891.Open the full entry researchers established the Stanford IOG Research Hub. Stanford’s official page discloses that IOG is providing $4.5 million over three years, that faculty, undergraduates, and graduate students may all apply, and that research topics address interdisciplinary problems capable of affecting the entire blockchain industry.[11]
As IOG’s CEO, Hoskinson took part in the launch event and the steering committee, and outlined the research directions together with Stanford scholars such as David Tse and Dan Boneh and with IOG researchers. This is a company-funded research hub, not a fund in Hoskinson’s personal name; its role is to organize resources and governance, and specific research results belong to the authors of each project.[11]
Public Policy and Governance Engagement
Beyond technology and company management, Hoskinson has also taken part in policy discussions, including in the U.S. Congress, as an industry representative. His 2022 testimony discussed uses of blockchain, regulatory principles, and the Cardano case; it represents his public policy position and does not mean Congress or the Cardano community as a whole has adopted it.[6]
2022U.S. Congressional Testimony and Regulatory Positions
In June 2022, Hoskinson, as the founder of Cardano and CEO of IOG, submitted written testimony to a subcommittee of the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture. He argued for digital asset rules centered on principles, risks, and types of activity, and cited blockchain uses in identity, supply chains, agriculture, and finance to show that the technology serves more than speculative trading.[6]
The testimony also recommended that regulators and the industry establish ongoing collaboration, make use of open and transparent on-chain data, and allow rules to adapt to different degrees of decentralization. These were policy recommendations from an invited witness and do not mean the committee, Congress, or regulators have adopted them.[6]
2022Education Record Dispute and Laura Shin’s Findings
While researching Ethereum’s early history, journalist Laura ShinLaura ShinLaura Shin is a cryptocurrency journalist, podcast host and author, a former senior editor at Forbes who founded the crypto media outlet Unchained, hosts its podcast of the same name, and wrote “The Cryptopians,” about the first big cryptocurrency craze.Open the full entry checked Hoskinson’s record with the schools he had attended. Her published materials and subsequent reports indicate that the information she obtained from the schools was that Hoskinson had attended MSU Denver as a part-time undergraduate mathematics student and had taken undergraduate-level courses at the University of Colorado Boulder, but that school records did not support his having earned the degrees described or having enrolled in a mathematics doctoral program.[12]
On that basis, Shin questioned Hoskinson’s past statements in interviews and on social media about being a “graduate student,” “dropping out of a PhD program,” and completing degrees. Student records are subject to privacy rules, and the public materials are not complete transcripts.[12]
Response to Questions About His Education
Hoskinson initially called Shin’s The Cryptopians “a good novel.” In a subsequent public video titled “Angels and Demons,” he responded that he holds a university degree, had taken graduate mathematics credits at CU Boulder, and considered himself entitled to call himself a dropout because he had not completed his original goal; he also said this personal dispute does not affect Cardano’s engineering work.[13]
Differences remain between this response and the school accounts Shin published that public documents cannot fully resolve, particularly regarding the degree-granting institution, the type of degree, and whether he formally entered a doctoral program.[13]
November 18, 2022Midnight Publicly Announced at ScotFest
On November 18, 2022, Input Output announced that it was building Midnight, a data-protection blockchain, and Charles Hoskinson, as IOG’s founder and chief executive officer, publicly unveiled it at the ScotFest event at the University of Edinburgh. Official materials summarized the goals as giving developers a programmable choice between public and private computation, using zero-knowledge cryptography for selective disclosure of information, and making it easier for developers familiar with TypeScript to get started; in this first announcement, IOG described it as a sidechain of Cardano. This date precedes the 2026 mainnet.[14]
2022–2026Expansion, Contraction, and Closure of the Hoskinson Health Clinic
The Hoskinson family founded the Hoskinson Health & Wellness Clinic in Gillette, Wyoming, which began operating in 2022 with the aim of expanding the primary and specialty care local residents could obtain close to home. WyoFile explicitly listed Charles Hoskinson as the owner and noted that his family’s physician took part in the project; the clinic later expanded its staff, facilities, and services, and in early 2026 it at one point said it served about 20,000 patients.[15]
This is one of his most concrete brick-and-mortar businesses outside his cryptocurrency ventures, and it was also tied to local investments in construction, real estate, and medical infrastructure. The clinic is an independent medical institution, not a product of Cardano or IOG; patient numbers and the scale of services are figures the clinic gave to the media at particular stages and are not equivalent to an independent audit of medical quality or commercial sustainability.[15]
IO/IOG’s Venture Studio and the Limits of Personal Investment
After 2023, Input Output described the organization as a Venture Studio and listed Midnight, Lace, Catalyst, Blockfrost, RealFi, Partner Chains, and others as Portfolio 0 or its product ecosystem. The company also operates capabilities in incubation, launch, governance design, legal support, market entry, and fundraising readiness; these projects reflect IO/IOG’s institutional capital, research and development, and incubation arrangements.[16]
October 5, 2023Invitation-Only Devnet and More Than Four Years of R&D
In October 2023, IOG opened the initial invitation-only sandbox devnet, letting early developers try Midnight’s private smart contract environment, its TypeScript-integrated language, and a VS Code plugin. The announcement stated explicitly that the project was first made public at ScotFest in 2022, and said the devnet was a milestone result of more than four years of fundamental research and applied development. This indicates that Hoskinson’s role included setting the direction, organizing resources, and public explanation, but the language, proof system, toolchain, and node implementation came from research and engineering teams working over many years, not from him alone in the year the mainnet launched.[17]
2025Division of Roles Between the Midnight Foundation and Shielded Technologies
In 2025 Midnight established a clearer institutional division of roles through the Midnight Foundation and Shielded Technologies. Official explanations position the foundation as the long-term steward of the network’s direction, community, and ecosystem, and Shielded Technologies as the builder of the protocol, core infrastructure, developer tools, and technical roadmap. This structure distinguishes the early initiating and incubating role of Hoskinson and IOG from subsequent foundation governance, engineering delivery, and ecosystem participation.[18]
December 4, 2025NIGHT Launches on Cardano
In December 2025, Midnight officially announced that the NIGHT token had launched on Cardano and set the NIGHT previously claimed in the Glacier Drop to thaw gradually over 360 days; the announcement said more than 4.5 billion tokens had been claimed. This stage connected Midnight’s asset distribution with Cardano infrastructure, but the token launch did not mean Midnight’s mainnet had completed genesis, nor that Hoskinson personally issued, held, or controlled these tokens. The claimed amount and the schedule are the project’s official figures at the time.[19]
January 2026Clinic Layoffs and Operating Pressure Become Public
WyoFile reported that the Hoskinson Health & Wellness Clinic announced in January 2026 that it would cut about 40 positions. The clinic said at the time that it still served about 20,000 patients and employed about 250 people, and that it would not close immediately; patients whose services were discontinued would be notified directly by the clinic. The report also explicitly listed Charles Hoskinson as the clinic’s owner.[15]
During the same period, his construction and concrete-related businesses in Gillette also carried out large-scale layoffs, indicating operating pressure across the medical expansion, construction, and real estate investments. The “not closing” statement at the time of the announcement was interim information and was later superseded by a new decision to close.[15]
March 17, 2026Midnight Mainnet Genesis
Midnight created its mainnet genesis block at 03:17 UTC on March 17, 2026, and officially confirmed the network’s launch at the end of that month. Genesis established the starting point of the mainnet’s permanent state, so that subsequent transactions, smart contracts, and node activity continue on the same ledger history. The event was the launch of a production network after years of research and development, not the first appearance of the project concept.[20]
Midnight’s Technical Positioning: Partner-Chain L1, Dual State, and NIGHT/DUST
Midnight currently positions itself as a dedicated partner-chain Layer 1 network rather than a Layer 2 rollup network. Its architecture separates public state visible to all nodes from local private state held only by authorized participants; developers use Compact to describe which data and computation are public and which remain private, and generate zero-knowledge proofs on the client side for the network to verify. The economic model likewise distinguishes NIGHT, which is transferable, can participate in governance, and continuously generates resources, from DUST, which is private, non-transferable, and used to pay network fees; consensus combines AURA block production with GRANDPA finality. The mainnet initially launched with trusted or federated nodes, with expanding the validator set and decentralization as the subsequent roadmap.[21]
The Limits of Hoskinson’s Role in Midnight
In Midnight’s official “origin story,” Hoskinson explains the project’s motivation, privacy philosophy, and design evolution; combined with IOG’s 2022 announcement materials, this confirms that he is Midnight’s initiator and main public champion. A more precise attribution is that he publicly announced the project on behalf of IOG and has long explained its roadmap, IOG organized the early research and incubation, researchers and engineers built the specific protocols and tools, and the Midnight Foundation, Shielded Technologies, node operators, and the community took on different subsequent responsibilities.[22]
July 2026Hoskinson Health Ceases Operations
The clinic subsequently announced that it would close on July 31, 2026. Wyoming Public Media reported that Campbell County Health then became the only large local health care provider and was assessing how to take on the primary and specialty care needs of Hoskinson patients; some specialty services previously available locally might require patients to travel elsewhere.[23]
The closure turned the project from a vision of “expanding rural health care supply” into an actual exit.[23]
2026Monument Health Takes Over Records and Some Services
Monument Health subsequently referred to the former institution as “Formerly Hoskinson Health & Wellness Clinic” and published transition arrangements for medical records and services. Patients planning to continue care at Monument Health do not need to print their records themselves, as complete records will be transferred into the new system at the time of appointments and visits; other patients may request copies within a specified period through the former portal or a records custodian.[24]
Monument Health plans to open its Gillette Clinic at 469 WY-50 on November 2, 2026, and said it would separately announce the physicians joining and the list of services. The transition arrangements show that the original clinic’s closure did not mean all of its facilities, staff, and records disappeared at once, but the new institution is an independent health system.[24]
