Key facts
December 1, 1965Birth
In a birthday essay dated December 1, 2025, Feld marked turning 60 and continuing his birthday-running tradition.[2]
1985Starting a Business at College
Feld recalled starting Feld Technologies while attending MIT in 1985. An early dental-practice client commissioned management and insurance-billing software written in DataFlex. He charged hourly, and the business grew through operating cash flow.[3]
1987–1988Completing His Degrees
Feld earned his MIT bachelor’s degree in 1987 and master’s degree in 1988. A 2023 alumni report also described his and Amy Batchelor’s support for entrepreneurship education and fellowships.[4]
1993Selling Feld Technologies
AmeriData Technologies acquired Feld Technologies in 1993. Foundry’s institutional biography dates the start of his entrepreneurial career to 1987, while his own retrospective describes an initial start in 1985.[5]
He subsequently became an angel investor, moved to Boulder, Colorado, in 1995, and became involved in the investment business that later became Mobius Venture Capital.[5]
2000sExpansion and Retrenchment
Reflecting on the dot-com period, Feld said too many board seats had limited his effectiveness. Mobius contracted after expanding, and its investment period ended in 2005. These experiences informed his preference for a small partnership and sustained involvement in company governance.[6]
2006–2007Founding Techstars
Techstars was incorporated in November 2006 by David Cohen, David Brown, Brad Feld, and Jared Polis. Its first accelerator class took place in Boulder in summer 2007, distinct from the incorporation date.[7]
2007Foundry’s First Fund
Foundry’s first fund dates to 2007. The firm later broadened its approach from direct startup investments to backing other venture funds, developing a network of companies and investment firms.[8]
Mentorship and Venture Education
Feld advocates deciding whether venture capital suits a business before selecting investors appropriate to its stage. With Jason Mendelson, he developed discussions of financing terms into Venture Deals materials and participated in related courses offered through Techstars and Kauffman Fellows Academy.[9]
2022–2023The Foundry 2022 Fund
On May 9, 2023, Foundry announced its $500 million Foundry 2022 fund, which had begun investing in 2022. The figure describes the fund’s size.[8]
January 19, 2024The Final Fund
Foundry announced that Foundry 2022 would be its final fund. It also stated that it would continue Series A and B investing and support its existing portfolio over the long term. Ending new fund formation did not mean an immediate cessation of operations.[10]
Books
Feld’s books cover startup communities, boards, financing, and entrepreneurial life. Venture Deals, co-authored with Jason Mendelson, reached its fourth edition in 2019. Give First: The Power of Mentorship, published in 2025, examines mentoring without expecting an immediate return.[11]
Philanthropy and Public Engagement
Feld and Amy Batchelor co-founded Anchor Point Foundation. Its areas of support include the arts, education, entrepreneurship, climate and conservation, health, social justice, and causes serving women and girls.[12]
