Key facts

Beginnings as Squadhelp

Darpan Munjal founded Squadhelp as a bootstrapped crowdsourced naming business, connecting entrepreneurs’ briefs with name suggestions from a creative community.[1]

Expansion into Domain Sales

In his 2024 retrospective, Munjal dated the marketplace’s launch to roughly five years earlier. Initially an adjunct to crowdsourced naming, domain sales became the main growth driver.[2]

Hilco Strategic Investment

The company received a $10 million strategic investment from Hilco Digital Assets for hiring, new services and marketing. The investment preceded the change from Squadhelp to Atom.[1]

Rebranding as Atom

Squadhelp adopted the Atom brand and atom.com domain as its business expanded. Existing naming contests and marketplaces continued, with expansion plans spanning branding tools, customer research, trademark services and domain management.[2]

First Registrar Phase

The first registrar phase moved marketplace-purchased .com domains into Atom’s own system for DNS management within the buyer’s account. Installment buyers gained registrar access with transfer restrictions; general public registrations remained a later rollout at that point.[3]

Public Registrar Launch

Atom launched its public registrar, integrating registration, renewals, DNS, portfolios and transactions. Domains already registered there could transfer automatically after sale. Faster purchase-to-payout processing was a stated objective, rather than a guarantee that every transaction would finish within an hour.[4]

Developer Platform Launch

Atom Developers launched Registrar APIs and an MCP server for discovery, appraisals, trademark information, listings, registration, renewals and DNS. It also offered integrating partners 35% of the net premium revenue generated through their integrations, extending distribution into startup and website-building tools.[5]

MPP Payments

Atom announced MPP support for new registrations and marketplace domains. MCP provides tool access; MPP handles payment. The live payment method used Stripe card tokens. Transactions required a connected Atom account, with server-computed prices and single-use payment challenges.[6]

x402 and USDC Purchases

Atom announced x402 checkout powered by Coinbase Business. Agents show domain, price and authorization expiry, obtain buyer approval and sign a USDC authorization on Base; payment is captured after successful registration. The announcement initially covered new registrations, with premium listings to follow.[7]

AtomPay Update

AtomPay handles privately negotiated domain transactions without requiring an existing Atom listing. The update added live tracking, bundled payments and USDC payments/payouts, while transferring and paying out each bundled domain separately. Its $25 single-domain fee was a temporary offer with eligibility, value and account limits.[9]

Management: Current Roles

The company site names Darpan Munjal as CEO, Grant Polachek as Chief Growth Officer, Ramu Taraka as CTO and Hosni Ziadi as Head of Finance. Its approach combines human curation with AI-supported domain discovery and branding.[10]

Naming Services: Crowdsourced Contests

Naming contests begin with a business description and project brief. Creatives submit ideas, while clients rate entries, give feedback and build a shortlist. Optional audience testing, trademark reports and domain checks support the client’s final selection.[11]

Testing Tools: Simulated AI Audiences

AI Audience Testing compares two to six names against a target-market description using 100 simulated personas. Results are grouped by demographics and interests. These votes are AI-generated, rather than responses from 100 surveyed consumers.[12]

Developer Interfaces: Four API Groups

Official documentation groups APIs into partnership, registrar, seller and intelligence services. They cover premium-domain transactions, DNS and registration management, portfolio listings, appraisals and US trademark search. Standard APIs authenticate with an account identifier and API key, unlike MCP’s authorization flow.[13]

Agent Permissions: Consent and Spending Controls

Atom MCP uses OAuth with PKCE and separate read and registration scopes. Its documented controls include quote-then-confirm flows, server-set prices, per-call and daily caps, idempotent purchases and revocation. Appraisals and preliminary trademark screens are informational, not transaction prices or legal determinations.[14]
