Key facts
2022The Arlington Farm
In April 2022, Area 2 Farms was preparing its first major harvest in an Arlington, Virginia warehouse. Co-founder Tyler Baras grew crops with soil, compost, and worms. State and county grants totaled $80,000.[1]
Early subscribers were mostly friends and family, and the farm also planned to attend local farmers markets.[1]
Organic Certification
The USDA Organic Integrity Database lists AREA 2 FARMS PBC Corp as certified by Ecocert SAS, effective September 5, 2023. The record, updated in August 2026, covers crops and handling.[2]
Costs and Implementation Constraints
Marketplace reported in 2023 that indoor farm conversions still incur HVAC, airflow, and piping costs and face zoning constraints. It recorded Area 2 Farms' weekly bundle at $40 at that time, a historical price rather than a current offer.[3]
In December 2023, head farmer Nate Arias argued that large farms selling to supermarkets face high property and operating costs alongside lower margins. He saw a role for small farms serving buildings and their surrounding neighborhoods.[4]
2025Fairfax Expansion Plans
In August 2025, Fairfax City Economic Development announced a partnership for a second farm on Fairfax Boulevard. The project included a ten-year lease, a $25,000 grant, and adaptive reuse; the announcement projected opening by year-end.[5]
The project followed a 2024 zoning amendment and included plans for a farm stand.[5]
2025Funding
In September 2025, the company announced $9 million in funding led by Slow Ventures and Seven Seven Six, with ANIMO Ventures participating. It planned to expand farms, technology, and partnerships. The announcement identified Oren Falkowitz as founder and CEO.[6]
The company also reported more than 20,000 harvests delivered by its Arlington pilot.[6]
Community Subscriptions and Farm Size
In a 2025 interview, founder Oren Falkowitz proposed limiting each farm to about 5,000 square feet and expanding through additional neighborhood sites, rather than producing surpluses that require wholesaling. The Arlington farm also hosts school groups.[7]
2026Franchise Launch
On March 10, 2026, Area 2 Farms announced a franchise model for neighborhood farms in existing properties, supplying consumers directly. It brought in franchise adviser Paul Flick. A nationwide network remained an expansion goal.[8]
Media Recognition
Fast Company placed Area 2 Farms eighth on its 2026 list of the most innovative companies in agriculture.[9]
Farm Locations
As of October 2026, the official directory lists Arlington as open, while Fairfax and Peachtree City, Georgia remain coming soon. Fairfax accepts early subscriptions and Peachtree City maintains a waitlist; neither listing establishes an operating farm.[10]
The website also identifies Austin, South Florida, and Columbus as expansion areas.[10]
Harvests and Visits
The website describes weekly or fortnightly bundles of vegetables, herbs, and microgreens, with 51 harvest weeks annually and a break at Christmas. Residents can visit the farm.[11]
The SILO Growing System
The company describes SILO as a system that circulates growing containers through indoor temperature and humidity zones and automates irrigation. It uses soil and modules configurable to existing buildings. Farmers still inspect crops, harvest, and serve subscribers.[12]
The design moves containers instead of keeping every growing zone under identical conditions.[12]
The SILO observed in 2023 was nearly 15 feet tall and moved crates from bottom to top every two hours.[3]
Farm Ownership and Support
The franchise website describes small, farmer-owned neighborhood operations, supported by training in soil-based cultivation, farm installation, and launch assistance. Its approach centers on recruiting operators and building local subscriber relationships.[13]
