Key facts

Acquiring the Desert Inn

In April 2000, Valvino Lamore, LLC, the predecessor of Wynn Resorts, was formed in Nevada to acquire land and design, develop, and finance a new casino hotel named “Le Rêve.” In June of that year, Valvino acquired the Desert Inn Resort and Casino for about $270 million (plus a working capital adjustment), and later bought additional lots around its golf course for $47.8 million; after about ten weeks, Valvino ceased operating the existing casino to focus on the new project.[1][1][1]

Wynn Resorts Goes Public and Project Planning

Wynn Resorts, Limited was formed in June 2002 and completed its initial public offering in October of that year. At the time, Le Rêve was planned for the northeast corner of the intersection of the Las Vegas Strip and Sands Avenue, with about 1,350 feet of Strip frontage, including about 55 acres for the hotel and about 137 acres for a golf course designed by Tom Fazio and Wynn.[1][1][1][1]

Opening

Wynn Las Vegas opened on April 28, 2005, with its Broadway Theater opening in late August of that year with the musical Avenue Q. The total cost of the project was about $2.74 billion, including the purchase of the former Desert Inn land and buildings (including the land later used for Encore), land for employee parking, design and construction, financing fees, interest, and pre-opening costs.[2][2]

When it first opened, the resort had 2,674 rooms and suites in a 45-story tower, plus 36 fairway villas and 6 private-entry villas; its approximately 111,000-square-foot casino had 137 table games, 1,960 slot machines, and a baccarat salon, among other features. The resort also had an 18-hole golf course, a Ferrari and Maserati dealership, and Le Rêve, a water-based show created by Franco Dragone.[2][2][2]

Encore Opens

On December 22, 2008, Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, the expansion of Wynn Las Vegas, opened. Located immediately adjacent to and connected with Wynn Las Vegas, it features a 2,034-room all-suite hotel and an approximately 72,000-square-foot casino with about 95 table games and 835 slot machines.[3][3]

Steve Wynn Resigns from the Company

In January 2018, it was reported that Wynn Resorts Chairman and CEO Stephen A. (Steve) Wynn had been accused of sexually harassing several female employees, which he has consistently denied. On February 6, 2018, Wynn Resorts announced that he had resigned as chairman and CEO, effective immediately, and the board appointed Matt Maddox as CEO and D. Boone Wayson as non-executive chairman. Wynn subsequently sold his shares in the company and left the board.[4][4][5][5][5][4]

Non-Prosecution Agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice

On September 6, 2024, Wynn Las Vegas, LLC, the operating entity of Wynn Las Vegas, entered into a non-prosecution agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California and the U.S. Department of Justice, resolving an investigation into transactions involving foreign patrons: these transactions were handled by former employees, agents, and other third parties that were unlicensed money transmitting businesses, in violation of Title 18, Section 1960 of the U.S. Code. Under the agreement, Wynn Las Vegas forfeited $130 million in funds involved and will continue to enhance its compliance program; the Department of Justice agreed not to bring criminal charges on the matter, provided that it fulfills its obligations.[6][6][6][6]

The Department of Justice took into account the historical nature of the transactions, Wynn Las Vegas’s cooperation with the multi-year investigation, the fact that it no longer employs the individuals involved, and the remedial measures it took before the agreement. The agreement resolved federal regulatory inquiries begun in or around 2014 into Wynn Las Vegas’s compliance with Section 1960 and the Bank Secrecy Act. Wynn Resorts said it accepted responsibility for the actions of the individuals involved, which violated the company’s compliance policies and procedures.[6][6][4]
