Key facts
December 2015Founding Member of OpenAI
On December 11, 2015, OpenAI published its founding announcement, bylined by Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever, which listed him among the organization’s founding members alongside Trevor Blackwell, Andrej KarpathyAndrej KarpathyAndrej Karpathy is an AI researcher and educator, one of the founding members of OpenAI, who served as Tesla’s Director of AI and led the Autopilot computer vision team from 2017 to 2022, founded the AI education company Eureka Labs in 2024, and joined Anthropic in 2026 to work on pre-training research; at Stanford he designed and taught the university’s first deep learning course, CS231n, and he coined the term “vibe coding.”Open the full entry, John Schulman and others.[1]
May 2016Doctoral Dissertation at New York University
In May 2016, he submitted his doctoral dissertation, “Learning Algorithms from Data,” to the Department of Computer Science at New York University; the title page lists the name of Rob Fergus.[2]
2019Robot Hand Research and Innovators Under 35
In 2019 he was named to MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35 list in the artificial intelligence and robotics category, with a citation saying he taught a robot hand to figure things out on its own. On October 16 of that year, OpenAI posted the paper “Solving Rubik’s Cube with a Robot Hand” on arXiv, showing that models trained only in simulation could carry out a complex manipulation task on a real robot hand; he was among the authors.[3][4]
July 2021The Codex Evaluation Paper
On July 7, 2021, OpenAI posted on arXiv the paper “Evaluating Large Language Models Trained on Code,” which evaluates large language models trained on code; he was listed last among its 58 authors.[5]
March 2026Head of AI Resilience at the OpenAI Foundation
On March 24, 2026, OpenAI Foundation board chair Bret Taylor wrote that he, a co-founder of OpenAI, was joining the foundation as Head of AI Resilience to lead that program.[6]
June 1, 2026Publishing “Resilience in the Age of AI”
On June 1, 2026, he published the bylined post “Resilience in the age of AI” on the OpenAI Foundation website, describing “AI resilience” as an ecosystem approach to mitigating AI risks and saying the initial work would focus on four areas: bio-resilience, cyber-resilience, AI model safety, and AI’s impact on young people.[7]
