Key facts

First Tuffy Muffler Opens in Detroit

In 1970 the first Tuffy Muffler shop opened in Detroit, Michigan, and the early stores focused mainly on exhaust and muffler work. Tuffy later evolved from a muffler shop into a full auto service center, expanding into tires, brakes, transmissions and engine repair.[1][2][1][1]

50th Anniversary

In March 2020 Tuffy Tire and Auto Service Centers marked its 50th anniversary with a 50-day sweepstakes for customers. By then Tuffy’s stores had spread to 14 states, with the most new-store growth in Florida, and to meet customer demand for complete repairs under one roof it had broadened its services to include brakes, tires, oil changes and more.[2][2][2][2]

Acquired by Mavis

In December 2021 Mavis Tire Express Services announced the acquisition of Tuffy Tire & Auto Service Centers. Tuffy then had 165 service centers in the Midwest, South and Southeast, more than 140 of them franchised, which would continue to be owned and operated by their franchisees; Tuffy chief executive and president Roger Hill joined the leadership team of the combined company, and the brand’s headquarters remained in Toledo. With Tuffy, Mavis had more than 1,200 locations in 35 states.[3][3][3][3]

Roger Hill said that over the previous 50 years Tuffy had grown into one of the largest automotive repair franchises in the country. Terms were not disclosed and the deal was expected to close before the end of 2021; Spengler Nathanson served as legal counsel to Tuffy, Acquivest Financial Group as its financial advisor, and Covington & Burling as legal counsel to Mavis. Mavis lists Tuffy among its 2021 acquisitions, and as of August 2026 Tuffy remained one of the Mavis brands.[3][4][3][5][6]

Services and Warranty

Tuffy stores provide repair and maintenance services including brakes, oil changes, tires, air conditioning, cooling systems, engines, exhaust, steering and suspension, wheel alignment, batteries and transmissions, with ASE-certified technicians servicing domestic and imported vehicles and a free courtesy inspection of tires, brakes, fluids, battery, belts and exhaust. Its service promise is “Done Right. Period.,” and each purchase carries a national warranty of at least two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first.[7][7][8][8][7][7]

Franchise Model

As of October 2026, Tuffy stores are located in urban and suburban areas from Virginia and Florida to Michigan and North Dakota, and the company continues to recruit single-unit and multi-unit franchisees, each of whom receives a protected territory. The initial franchise fee is $30,000; the royalty and marketing fees are each 5% of sales, with tires and batteries charged at 1%, and 4.5% of the marketing fee is spent in the franchisee’s local market.[7][7][7][7]

Tuffy requires franchisees to have a net worth of at least $500,000 and liquid assets of at least $150,000, and estimates the initial investment—including equipment, signage and opening inventory that are normally financed—at between $227,700 and $638,500. On the basis set out in Item 19 of its franchise disclosure document (franchised stores in operation for at least two years with at least six bays), average gross sales per franchised store in 2025 were $1,448,571, the median was $1,293,494 and the highest was $5,360,608.[9][9][10][10][10][11]
