Early Life: Upbringing and Education
Tinie Tempah was born in London on November 7, 1988; his parents had come to the UK from Nigeria in their twenties. He grew up on the Aylesbury estate in Peckham, London, and moved with his family to Plumstead around the age of 12.[1][2][2][2]
He attended St Paul’s, a Catholic school in south-east London. At 13 he looked up “anger” in a thesaurus, came to “temper,” found it too aggressive, and added “Tinie” to make his stage name. He earned A-Levels in media studies, religious studies and psychology, and then decided not to go to university so that he could concentrate on music. Seeing the music video for So Solid Crew’s “21 Seconds” made him realise that rap did not have to come from the other side of the Atlantic; he also took a job selling double glazing and used the earnings to fund his first music video.[3][3][1][2][4][2][2]

They call each other cousins but are not related; their families come from the same village in Nigeria. For the next six years he did not have a record deal.[5][5][5][5][5][5]
