Education and 2004 JPL Research Experience

Siqi Chen graduated from the University of California, San Diego, and early on worked in software engineering and machine vision. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) 2004 summer intern directory lists his name, with UC San Diego as his school and robotic space landing as his assignment. He later reflected in interviews on his career choice to move from technical research to product design.[1][2][3]

Early Internet Companies and Social Game Startup

Before entering game entrepreneurship, he worked at Webmetrics, Veoh, and Powerset. After Facebook opened its application platform in 2007, he and Alex Le developed games around social networks and founded Serious Business, with him serving as chief executive officer.[2][4]

Friends for Sale and Social Game Design

Serious Business’s flagship product, Friends for Sale, combined friend relationships with virtual trading. Siqi Chen and Alex Le jointly worked on its design and development. In a 2010 interview, he described social games as continuously operated products, emphasizing the links among user retention, social distribution, virtual goods, and data analysis.[4]

Serious Business Acquisition and Work at Zynga

In 2010, Serious Business was acquired by Zynga. He then worked in product management at Zynga, working on games such as Treasure Isle and holding management positions such as product lead and general manager–type roles; he later also worked with the China business team.[2][4][3]

Hey and the Personal Journal App Heyday

After leaving Zynga, he founded Hey and launched Heyday, which automatically organized records of personal life. The product launched in late 2013 with a focus on private journaling. He recalled in interviews that a private journal does not easily spread through public sharing, and even an app store feature did not solve the problem of sustained growth, after which the team looked for a new product direction.[3]

Stolen Social App

In early 2016, Hey launched Stolen, a virtual trading game built on Twitter accounts. The product drew attention but also sparked controversy over using account information without the owners’ consent and over online harassment. The app was shut down shortly after launch; Siqi Chen later discussed the experience as a case of conflict between product appeal and social impact.[2][3]

Joining Postmates

In 2016, Postmates acquired the Hey team. Siqi Chen then led consumer product and growth work, covering mobile, web, and growth engineering. In interviews, he emphasized that growth for an on-demand delivery product cannot depend only on app metrics but also requires coordinating consumers, merchants, and delivery supply.[2]

Product and Management Work at Sandbox VR

A 2018 Getting2Alpha interview introduced him as president and chief product officer of Sandbox VR. He had met founder Steven Zhao in college and joined the team after experiencing location-based multiplayer virtual reality, later serving as chief executive officer. His career thus extended from digital apps to location-based entertainment combining venues, hardware, and content.[3][5]

Pandemic Impact and Departure from Sandbox VR

In a Sacra interview, he recalled that the pandemic caused Sandbox VR’s in-person revenue to plunge, and the company had to keep recalculating how long it could sustain operations. He used spreadsheets to model different cash and layoff scenarios and left the company when the team was sharply reduced. The experience prompted him to rethink how managers understand financial models.[6]

Views on AI and Financial Judgment

In October 2025, in an interview with The Secret CFO, he argued that the value of AI lies in enhancing the understanding and judgment of finance professionals, not merely in automatically producing answers. He also noted that a company requiring the use of AI and employees actually developing effective ways of working with it are different problems; products should make users genuinely feel they are useful, and strategic finance work still requires human judgment.[11]
