Key facts

Founding and First Fund

Placeholder is a venture capital firm headquartered in New York that invests in early-stage blockchain companies and open networks. Joel Monegro and Chris Burniske began planning their partnership in 2016, established the management company Placeholder Management on August 1, 2017, and closed the first fund in December of the same year.[1][2]

Disclosing the Decred Investment

In May 2018, Placeholder published an investment thesis disclosing that it held Decred’s DCR. The article focused its research on on-chain governance, community treasury allocation, and stakeholder participation. Decred itself was launched with self-funding by its team and did not hold an ICO.[3]

Setting Out Its Approach to Companies and Networks

Placeholder treats financing of blockchain companies and investment in open networks separately: companies can raise capital through equity, equity with attached token rights, and future token agreements, while network assets can be bought through private sales, public offerings, exchanges, or over-the-counter markets. The firm emphasizes research based on network usage, asset distribution, and governance structure, and builds investment positions gradually as projects develop.[4]

Maker and Middleware Protocol Research

In January 2019, Placeholder disclosed that it held Maker’s MKR and researched the relationship between the DAI credit system and the governance asset. A middleware protocol article published in February treated services such as trading, lending, storage, and location verification as businesses that can develop across underlying networks, citing projects including 0x, Maker, FOAM, and Filecoin. The network structures and policy parameters in the articles reflect the research context of the time.[5][6]
