Sears Combines Two Chains to Form NTB

In 1997 Sears Roebuck & Co. combined its National Tire Warehouse (NTW) and Tire America chains to form NTB, converting 278 of their nearly 300 stores to the new NTB format. Sears had planned to open 700 NTB stores by 2001 but fell short; NTB later closed many stores, shutting 50 in 2000 alone.[1][2][2]

Acquired by TBC Corporation

On November 29, 2003, under a stock purchase agreement signed on September 21 that year, the tire wholesaler TBC Corporation bought all of the outstanding capital stock of NTW Incorporated from Sears, Roebuck and Co. NTW had been run by Sears as a separate operating division under the name National Tire & Battery (NTB), with 225 retail tire and automotive centers in 20 states and annual revenues of more than $425 million; total consideration was $225 million, financed through debt and sale-leaseback arrangements, and at closing TBC sold and leased back 86 stores owned by NTW for net proceeds of about $132 million.[3][3][3][3][3]

TBC said the acquisition was intended to increase the size and geographic reach of its retail network and to strengthen its purchasing, distribution and marketing economies. TBC’s then chief executive and president, Larry Day, said the acquisition would boost TBC’s store count by 25% and provide an outlet for its private-brand tires; NTB had until then sold manufacturer flag brands such as Michelin, BFGoodrich and Goodyear.[3][2][2][2]

Parent Company TBC Acquired by Sumitomo

On September 19, 2005, Sumitomo Corporation of America, the U.S. subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, announced an agreement to acquire TBC Corporation for $35.00 per share in cash, a total value of about $1.1 billion including debt; on completion TBC became its subsidiary, and NTB came under Sumitomo ownership along with it.[4][4][4]

Takes Over Some Tire Kingdom Stores

In 2015 TBC rebranded 64 Tire KingdomTire KingdomTire Kingdom is a tire and automotive repair and maintenance chain whose main market is Florida. Founded by Chuck Curcio in West Palm Beach in 1972, it was owned in turn by Michelin, an investor group led by Goldman Sachs and the tire wholesaler TBC Corporation, and in June 2023 it was sold to Mavis Tire Express Services together with the rest of TBC’s company-owned retail business.Open the full entry stores in Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Vermont as NTB, with exterior and interior store redesigns, while keeping the Tire Kingdom brand in Florida. Former TBC chief executive Erik Olsen said the two brands’ strategies were extremely similar and that the main difference was geography: Tire Kingdom is based in Florida, while NTB has a much wider footprint.[2][2]

112 Stores Sold to Mavis

In February 2020 Mavis Tire Express Services bought 112 NTB Tire and Service Centers from TBC in the Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and Atlanta markets, leaving TBC with 615 stores under the NTB and Tire Kingdom banners. Then TBC chief executive Erik Olsen said that further consolidating NTB’s footprint was consistent with the company’s strategy of focusing on core markets, and that the proceeds would go toward strategic initiatives across its retail, franchise, wholesale, distribution and e-commerce businesses.[2][2][2][2][2]

TBC Announces Sale of the Remaining Stores

On May 22, 2023, TBC announced the sale of its company-owned retail business to Mavis, including 392 NTB Tire and Service Centers and 203 Tire Kingdom stores; financial terms were not disclosed. After the deal Mavis’s network would total about 2,000 stores, including the 112 NTB stores bought in 2020. TBC also signed a distribution agreement with Mavis to supply tires to its retail stores.[5][5][5][5]

Fully Part of Mavis

On June 1, 2023, TBC completed the transaction, transferring ownership and operation of the 392 NTB stores to Mavis. This ended NTB’s period under TBC that had begun in 2003; it has since been wholly owned and operated by Mavis, keeping its own name, with online booking available through the Mavis website. In August 2024 Mavis co-chief executive David Sorbaro said that some NTB stores close to Mavis stores had been switched to the Mavis brand.[6][1][1][1][7]

As of October 2026, on Mavis’s figures, NTB had more than 350 stores nationwide in the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast; as of August 2026 it remained one of the Mavis brands.[1][1][8]

Services

NTB stores offer tire sales and installation, oil changes, brake service, battery testing and replacement, wheel alignments, steering and suspension repair, and state inspections where applicable.[1]
