Before creating tbh, he shut down a total of 14 apps.[2][2][2][2][3]
2012Launching Politify at Berkeley
During the 2012 U.S. presidential election, Bier, then a student at the University of California, Berkeley, launched Politify: after users entered personal information, the app estimated whether Barack Obama’s or Mitt Romney’s policies would benefit them more financially. Politify reached about 4 million people in its first month and received coverage from many major media outlets.[3][3][3]
He then designed similar budget calculators for local and federal officials; when the federal government shut down in 2013 and a major contract was canceled, he stopped building products for the government and over the following years built more than a dozen apps for teenage users, shrinking his development cycle from about a year to two weeks.[4][4][4][4]
August 2017Launching tbh
With the company down to about 60 days of cash, Bier’s team developed tbh, an anonymous compliment-polling app: users answered positive questions such as “Who has the best smile?” by choosing one of four friends, and the person chosen received an anonymous notification; the app offered no keyboard input, to prevent cyberbullying. In the summer of 2017, tbh first launched at a high school in Georgia, where 40% of students downloaded it within two days, and the next day it spread to 3,000 schools; it officially launched in a limited number of states in August and reached No. 1 on the U.S. Apple App Store in September.[2][3][3][3][3][2][4]
October 16, 2017Facebook Acquires tbh
On October 16, 2017, Facebook, Inc. announced that it was acquiring tbh and would let it operate under its own brand. tbh had reached 5 million downloads and 2.5 million daily active users over the previous nine weeks; the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Bier and his three co-creators, Erik Hazzard, Kyle Zaragoza, and Nicolas Ducdodon, joined the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, where Bier became a lead product manager.[2][2][2][2][3]
February 2018Sharing Startup Lessons at Berkeley
In February 2018, Bier spoke at the Newton Lecture Series at the University of California, Berkeley, in a conversation moderated by Jeremy Fiance, founder of The House Fund and one of his early investors. He said that everything in Silicon Valley seems like an overnight success but the process was tough, that he had gotten “really good at shutting down apps, really good at failing,” and that his self-doubt had been his greatest asset.[3][3][3][3]
August 2022Launching Gas
Bier left Meta after four years to return to startups. In August 2022, he, Isaiah Turner, and Dave Schatz launched Gas, an anonymous compliment-polling app for teenagers with mechanics similar to tbh, debuting it at the same high school where tbh had first launched; the new app added a paid feature, “God Mode,” that hinted at who had voted for the user. Gas was then available in only 12 states and for a time was the most downloaded social media app on the U.S. Apple App Store.[4][5][4][4][5][5]
Gas was hit by a sex-trafficking rumor that was entirely false, which affected its downloads; Bier said he and his team received hundreds of graphic death threats as a result. On January 17, 2023, the messaging platform Discord announced its acquisition of Gas, without disclosing the terms; Gas continued to operate as a standalone app, and its team joined Discord.
