Mention (Media Monitoring Tool)

Mention is a real-time web and social media monitoring (social listening) tool founded in France in 2012. Aimed mainly at small and mid-sized businesses, it helps brands track online and social media conversations about themselves, their competitors and their industry. It was acquired by the Nordic digital PR platform Mynewsdesk in 2018, and in 2025 it was taken over in French receivership proceedings by the social media management software company Agorapulse and renamed Mention by Agorapulse.

Key facts

Founded with eFounders

Mention was launched by the startup studio eFounders (later renamed Hexa); its co-founders were chief executive officer Matthieu Vaxelaire and chief technology officer Arnaud Le Blanc, who led the development of technology to analyze and interpret millions of sources in real time. The company was founded in 2012; it is also recorded as having been launched as part of eFounders’ 2013 batch.[1][2][3][3][4]

Seed Funding

In 2013, Mention raised a $1 million seed round with Alven Capital and Point Nine; by the time it was acquired in 2018 it had raised only $1 million in total, with eFounders, Alven and Point Nine Capital as its investors.[2][2][5][4]

Acquired by Mynewsdesk

On August 31, 2018, the Nordic digital PR SaaS platform Mynewsdesk announced that it had acquired Mention for an undisclosed sum; Mynewsdesk’s owner was the Norwegian business media group NHST. Mention continued to operate as a standalone product for the time being, and Vaxelaire became chief operating officer of the combined company, responsible for integration, innovation and growth; early investor Alven sold all of its shares, and the deal was eFounders’ second major exit.[3][3][3][3][5][3][4][2]

At the time of the acquisition, Mention had about 750,000 users and 4,000 business customers, $6 million in annual recurring revenue growing 35% year over year, and an average of more than 10,000 new users a month; it had more than 50 employees in Paris and New York, and users in more than 125 countries.[5][3][2][3]

Taken Over by Agorapulse in Receivership

Although its technology was recognized and its customers were spread internationally, Mention never managed to become profitable: its product, used mainly for monitoring, struggled to justify high pricing, its staff was large relative to its revenue, the fixed costs of accessing external data were high, and competition in the social listening market was intensifying; the company eventually entered French receivership proceedings (redressement judiciaire).[1][1][1][1][1]

At the end of March 2025, the French social media management software company Agorapulse announced that it would take over Mention’s assets, and the commercial court subsequently approved the sale plan: Agorapulse took on 14 Mention employees in France and 4 in the United States, its technology assets and its main commercial contracts, for a total of about €4.67 million, of which only €61,000 went to the bodies administering the proceedings. At the time Mention had 2,000 customers and earned 80% of its revenue outside France; the combined company had more than 180 employees, about 9,000 customers and combined revenue of about €25 million.[6][1][1][1][1][1]

Renamed Mention by Agorapulse

On May 22, 2025, Agorapulse co-founder and chief executive officer Emeric Ernoult published a post announcing the acquisition of Mention, with the product renamed Mention by Agorapulse and its social listening capabilities complementing Agorapulse’s publishing, engagement and reporting features; he said the two companies shared French roots as well as a similar global customer base.[6][6][6][6]

Product and Operating Company

Mention’s features fall into three groups, monitor, analyze and engage: it monitors mentions from more than 1 billion sources in real time, produces reports and dashboards with metrics such as volume, sentiment, location and source, and can schedule posts and respond on the major social networks; it is used for brand management, PR measurement, competitive analysis, crisis management, market research and social media management.[7][7][7][7][7][7][7][7][7][7]

As of October 2026, the Mention brand was owned by Agorapulse SAS, registered in Paris, which provides the services offered on the mention.com website.[8]
