Key facts
September 2016Bay Area Biohub
Chan Zuckerberg Biohub received a $600 million commitment and brought together UC Berkeley, UCSF and Stanford. Its initial projects covered cell atlases and infectious diseases.[1]
March 2023Chicago
The Chicago Biohub was announced with the University of Chicago, Northwestern and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Led by Shana O. Kelley, it focused on tissue measurement technologies and inflammation.[2]
October 2023New York
The New York Biohub brought together Columbia, Rockefeller and YaleYale UniversityYale University is a research university in New Haven, Connecticut. Its predecessor, the Collegiate School, received a charter in 1701. Trustees chose New Haven in 1716; the institution became Yale College in 1718 and Yale University in 1887. Yale provides undergraduate, graduate and professional education and has 14 undergraduate residential colleges. As of October 2026, its president was Maurie McInnis, who took office in July 2024. In 2026, Yale expanded aid for incoming undergraduates and celebrated its 325th anniversary.Open the full entry under Andrea Califano, aiming to engineer immune cells for research into early disease detection.[3]
November 2025Team Integration
Scientific teams were united as Biohub and the EvolutionaryScale team joined; Alex Rives became head of science.[4]
April 2026Virtual Biology Initiative
Biohub announced a five-year, $500 million commitment: $100 million for external research and $400 million for internal technology and data generation, aiming to build open biological data.[5]
May 2026Protein Models
The organization released ESMC, ESMFold2 and ESM Atlas for protein representation, structure prediction and data exploration. The reported binder validation was conducted in laboratory experiments.[6]
June 2026Laser Phase Plate
Biohub and Berkeley researchers reported improved cryo-EM contrast for small proteins using a laser phase plate. Biohub’s dual-laser system was described in a preprint.[7]
October 2026Data Collaboration
Biohub announced expanded cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, NIH and others, totaling $1.8 billion in funding, data and computation, including data resources built through previous federal investment.[8]
As of October 2026: Organization and Research
Biohub operates through entities including Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, Inc., with strategic, funding and operational support from CZI.[9]
Alex Rives leads science; Scott Fraser, Shana O. Kelley and Andrea Califano head the San Francisco, Chicago and New York teams, respectively.[10]
Research Tools and Data
CELL×GENE supports exploration of single-cell data; the CryoET Data Portal enables open sharing of cryo-electron tomography data.[11]
Biohub Platform provides protein models, the Fold structure-prediction tool, ESM Atlas and developer documentation.[12]
Open Research and Investigators
The organization encourages researchers to post preprints before peer review to accelerate the exchange of findings.[13]
Its investigator program supports interdisciplinary collaboration; affiliated investigators receive flexible support to explore new tools and techniques.[14]
