Founding an App Marketplace

Pivot to Mobile Intelligence

According to Newfund’s portfolio profile, Apptopia pivoted to mobile intelligence in 2015, helping customers understand markets through downloads, usage, retention and revenue information. Its early customers included app publishers and advertising platforms, alongside investors in private and public markets.[1]

Initial Newfund Investment

Newfund reports making its first investment in Apptopia in October 2017. As of November 2026, Apptopia’s website also names ABS Capital Partners, Sound Ventures, Blossom Street Ventures, Mark CubanMark CubanMark Cuban is an American entrepreneur and investor whose early work in computer systems and internet audio and video expanded into sports, film, venture investment and pharmaceuticals. He was the Dallas Mavericks’ controlling owner and a longstanding investor on Shark Tank, and co-founded Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company.Open the full entry Companies and Telegraph Hill Capital among its investors. The list does not establish their current ownership percentages.[1][3]

Bloomberg Distribution Partnership

Newfund records an exclusive distribution partnership with Bloomberg in 2019 to bring app-activity data to its clients. Apptopia’s 2021 funding announcement subsequently described a mobile-intelligence application launched in the Bloomberg Terminal’s App Portal for traders, portfolio managers and other investment professionals.[1][4]

US$20 Million Financing and CEO Transition

Apptopia announced a US$20 million Series C round led by ABS Capital Partners, with participation from existing investors including Blossom Street Ventures. Co-founder Eliran Sapir moved from CEO to chairman, while COO Jonathan Kay became CEO. ABS partners Mike Avon and Paul Mariani joined the board. Planned uses included business expansion and data from connected devices beyond mobile apps.[4]

KPI Forecasting Launch

Apptopia introduced KPI Forecasting, combining mobile behavioral panel data and modeling to estimate metrics such as advertising revenue, premium subscribers and gross bookings. The announcement described reports every two weeks, comparisons with market consensus, and initial coverage of social media, online travel, gaming and streaming. Its stated forecast error rates are company-reported product performance, rather than an error measure for all app statistics.[5]

Mobile Consumer Panel Acquisition

Apptopia announced the acquisition of a mobile consumer panel covering the United States and Europe, to integrate with its existing datasets and deepen retention, cross-app migration and engagement analysis. The announcement did not identify the seller or transaction value. Expansion of its US panel by year-end was a stated objective, rather than an established outcome.[6]

Yipit Data Partnership

Jonathan Kay announced on the company website that Apptopia had become Yipit’s exclusive mobile data provider, complementing Yipit’s transaction data and KPI forecasting. The article also said disaggregated user-level panel data remained available only directly from Apptopia, distinguishing distribution partnerships from access to its complete product range.[7]

Broader Bloomberg Terminal Availability

Apptopia announced availability through the Bloomberg Terminal’s ALTD function across approximately 2,000 global tickers. Downloads, monthly active users and total time spent were supplied with a standard 14-day lag and history back to 2016; mutual clients could access additional metrics with shorter delays. User-level panel data and some intraday estimates remained directly available from Apptopia, so the standard Terminal dataset is not a complete real-time feed.[8]

MCP Server Release

Apptopia announced that its MCP server was available to all customers and included in all plans, with support for tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Its workflow maps apps to public companies, selects metrics using eight to thirteen quarters of year-over-year trends, and checks signals against user segments and sector data. The product page presents a research workflow and examples, not an independent guarantee of investment outcomes.[9][10]

Topic: Products and Customers

As of November 2026, the website positions Apptopia Base as core app-performance data for quantitative research and Apptopia Advanced as segmented behavioral data for fundamental analysis, alongside KPI forecasts, MCP access and data interfaces. Customers include fundamental analysts, quantitative investment firms, data teams, brands and app publishers. Its claim of a proprietary panel exceeding 15 million devices describes its reported dataset size, not an independently verified count of global active users.[11][3]

Topic: Data Methods and Interpretation

The company describes combining authorized app analytics, app-store rankings and metadata such as ratings, reviews and release notes to estimate downloads, revenue and usage. Its Our Data page describes absolute-value errors within 20% and emphasizes trends, growth and market share. Its terms provide statistical information as is without guaranteeing accuracy. Estimates therefore do not constitute direct audits of individual apps, and metrics, historical coverage and delivery lags need to be understood for each product.[12][13]

Topic: Data Governance and Organization

Apptopia’s compliance page describes a compliance committee, model-change alerts, a whistleblower channel and customer due-diligence questionnaires, and states that its statistical-data business does not collect personally identifiable information. These are company compliance representations. Apptopia, Inc. operates the service, with headquarters in Boston and an office in Kyiv, Ukraine. Its current leadership page lists CEO Jonathan Kay, chairman Eli Sapir, CTO Serge Balyuk, president and COO Steve Swad, and chief product officer Tim Santos.[14][13][3]
