Key facts

Early Life and Education in Sweden

Ghodsi was born in Iran and moved to Sweden with his family as a young child. He learned to program on a Commodore 64 as a child and later went on to study at a university in Sweden.[1]

He received an MBA from Mid Sweden University in 2003 and a PhD in distributed computing from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in 2006. His doctoral research dealt with distributed hash table algorithms, and he is listed among the PhD graduates supervised by Seif Haridi.[2][3]

Research and Teaching at Berkeley

In 2009, Ghodsi moved to the United States to conduct research at the University of California, Berkeley, collaborating with researchers including Ion StoicaIon StoicaIon Stoica is a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of its Sky Computing Lab. He co-founded Conviva, Databricks, Anyscale and the AI model evaluation platform LMArena.Open the full entry. His work covered distributed systems, resource management, and data processing, and he later became an adjunct professor at Berkeley.[4][2]

His academic homepage lists co-authored papers including Dominant Resource Fairness and Mesos from 2011, and he later also worked on research including Spark SQL and Structured Streaming. In 2013, he taught a distributed computing course, and in 2015 and 2018 he co-taught with Ion Stoica.[5]

Founding a Company and Shifting Toward Commercialization

In 2013, Ghodsi co-founded Databricks with six other partners to bring open-source technology developed at Berkeley to the commercial market. He was initially responsible for engineering and product management.[1][6]

Looking back in 2024, he said the team had initially counted on the popularity of the open-source project and self-service purchases to drive revenue, but revenue stalled in the second and third quarters of 2015. The company then shifted to enterprise sales and explored offering differentiated paid value on top of the open-source technology.[1]

On January 11, 2016, Databricks announced that Ghodsi had been formally promoted from vice president of engineering and product to chief executive officer, with former chief executive officer Ion Stoica becoming executive chairman. The appointment announcement listed enterprise adoption, customer expansion, and commercial growth as priorities for the new leadership team.[6]

Generative AI and Lessons from Founding a Company

On June 26, 2023, Databricks announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire MosaicML in a deal valued at about $1.3 billion, including retention arrangements. In the announcement, Ghodsi emphasized enabling enterprises to build generative AI models with their own data while retaining control of that data; at the time of the announcement, the deal had yet to close.[7]

In May 2024, he took part in a Stanford UniversityStanford UniversityStanford University is a research university in California founded by Leland and Jane Stanford in 1885 and opened in 1891.Open the full entry entrepreneurial thought leaders interview, discussing collaboration within a large co-founding team. He emphasized trust and diversity of professional backgrounds, and reflected that technical founders tend to underestimate experience in sales, marketing, and product management.[1]

Developing an Enterprise AI Platform

On August 13, 2026, Databricks announced that it had completed a $5 billion strategic financing at a valuation of $190 billion and said that its annualized revenue run-rate exceeded $7 billion. These figures are operating metrics the company disclosed at the time; a revenue run-rate is not settled full-year revenue.[8]

In that announcement, Ghodsi summarized the needs of enterprise AI agents as real-time business data, enterprise context, and model cost control, and the company was developing Lakebase, Genie, and Unity AI Gateway accordingly. His own X bio as of September 2026 still listed him as CEO and co-founder of Databricks.[8][9]
