Education and Early Software Projects

Atallah studied at Stanford University from 2010 to 2014; his public profile lists coursework including theory of computation and human-computer interaction. As a student, he built Dormlink, a dorm social network, and Notify, which used natural language processing to extract reminders from emails.[1][2]

He went on to work on a range of software products, including natural language search and data exploration tools at Palantir, the anonymous polling app Whatsgoodly, and the live-streaming platform hostess.fm. His list of personal projects also includes Redbase, a database tool.[2]

Co-founding OpenSea

In 2017, Atallah co-founded OpenSea with Devin Finzer, building an open marketplace for non-fungible tokens. The company joined Y Combinator’s Winter 2018 batch. Before that, he worked on Wificoin, which tried to use crypto tokens to incentivize Wi-Fi sharing.[3][2]

In the early days he juggled technical development, business partnerships, community support, and other work. As the business grew in 2021, the team gradually brought in leaders for each function; in January 2022, Nadav Hollander took over as chief technology officer, and Atallah shifted to work on the NFT ecosystem, investments, and security.[4]

On July 1, 2022, he announced that he would end his day-to-day role on July 30 to return to building products from scratch, while keeping his board seat. OpenSea’s current official team page still lists him as co-founder and director.[4][3]

In November of that year, he wrote about creator fees on NFT secondary sales, arguing that the enforcement methods of the time relied too heavily on marketplaces and calling for more options for creators. This was his technical and product view of the royalty mechanisms of the time.[5]

OpenRouter and Multi-Model Access

OpenRouter began operating in early 2023, with Atallah as co-founder and chief executive officer. The platform uses a unified interface to help developers choose and call AI models from different providers; he also built Window AI, a browser extension that lets web pages connect to models chosen by the user.[6][2]

In 2025, Menlo Ventures announced that it had led OpenRouter’s $40 million Series A round. The investor described the platform as also offering unified billing and model usage leaderboards to help developers weigh cost, latency, and performance.[7]

Atallah co-authored “State of AI: An Empirical 100 Trillion Token Study with OpenRouter,” a study based on more than 100 trillion tokens of real interaction data from the platform. The paper was posted to arXiv in January 2026 and discusses usage patterns in open-weight models, role-play, programming, and agentic inference.[8]

Funding and the Stripe Acquisition Agreement

OpenRouter closed a $113 million Series B round at a $1.3 billion valuation in February 2026, led by CapitalG. The round was later presented publicly in an article by investor Menlo Ventures.[9]

On August 19, Stripe announced that it had signed an agreement to acquire OpenRouter. The announcement stated that the two plan to combine model routing with economic infrastructure to help businesses manage AI usage costs and business efficiency; the announcement describes it as an acquisition agreement.[10]

In the announcement, Atallah said that different tasks suit different models and that developers need a neutral access layer. A 20VC episode summary from the same month also records his discussion of competition among routing services, rapid model iteration, and application companies facing competition from foundation model makers.[10][11]
