Key facts
April 12, 2004Domain Registered
In the 2000 U.S. presidential election, Al Gore won more of the national popular vote than his opponent but lost the Electoral College vote 266 to 271. As the 2004 election approached, Allan Keiter, who was interested in the topic, looked online for an Electoral College map he could interact with but could not find one, so he decided to build a website himself. On April 12, 2004, the domain 270towin.com was registered.[1][1][1][2]
August 2004Website Launches
In August 2004, ahead of that year’s presidential election, 270toWin officially launched; its home page featured an Electoral College map with the tagline “This isn’t a popularity contest,” which is still in use today. At the time, Keiter was also running myrateplan.com, a website comparing rates for household services, and 270toWin was a side project he had programmers develop.[3][3][4][4][4]
September 2012Historical Election Data and a Forecasting Contest
By the 2012 election, the site had compiled U.S. election data and maps dating back to 1789, and users could compare the latest polls with historical popular vote results state by state; the site also ran a forecasting contest inviting visitors to draw their own map of which states they expected to be red or blue, with a cash prize for the first person to correctly predict the actual outcome.[5][5][5]
June 2015Traffic Grows Markedly
Keiter said the site had grown steadily since 2004, but its traffic did not increase substantially until around June 2015, when Donald Trump announced his presidential run.[1]
November 8, 2016Election Night Traffic Peak
On the night of the 2016 presidential election, as states expected to lean toward Hillary Clinton went to Trump one after another, large numbers of users flocked to the site to work out each side’s paths to victory; demand at one point exceeded capacity, and some users could not open the site or some of its content. Keiter said it was the site’s best traffic day, and that 270toWin became the go-to site for people creating and sharing their own forecasts.[1][1][1]
The site subsequently introduced a mobile version, a delegate calculator for tracking the Democratic primary, and “The Road to 270,” a weekly column explaining one state’s political landscape.[1]
November 3, 2020Presidential Election Day
During the 2020 presidential election, 270toWin provided live updates of vote counts in the presidential, House, and Senate races. According to Freestar, the site’s advertising operations partner, the site recorded 385,865,945 ad impressions during the election; Keiter said traffic on Election Day and the day before and after equaled the total for the three years from 2017 to 2019.[1][4][4]

270toWin describes itself as a nonpartisan, independently operated website that is not financed or owned by any political party, industry group, or lobbyist; the site’s copyright holder is Electoral Ventures LLC. Keiter holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA with concentrations in marketing and finance; he said he handles most of the day-to-day business himself, with a few developers implementing features, and that election results data is licensed from a third-party provider.[3][3][6][4][4][4]
